Does it matter if you like it or not? I thought you were worried about functionality not appearance.

I played with one a while back and I straightened it.

i like to put a bimini swivel offshore knot san diego jam knot leader and then a knot that leaves a little loop and doesnt cinch down on the popper.

or a windon leader with the little loop knot(i cant remember the name)

Wouldn't this solve all your problems Rich. No knot of split ring pliers need for changing lures.

Rate for 150lbs. from Cabela's

Baosabi,

A snap swivel will fail you when you need it the most, a tropy fish.

Gman is using best popping setup. But invest is in a really good split ring plier to make changing easy.
That being said, my biggest fish always come when I tie directly to popper with worlds fair knot. a ugly knot that I can tie in the dark after 8 hrs of casting....

For both jigs and poppers, I use the Page Rankin knot to tie my braid to Mono/Fluoro then a uni (with a half hitch) to tie directly to the lure. If I'm trolling, I use a swivel (to prevent line twist).
rtran, I'm on the Nov 11 DSH trip and we can compare setups if you're interested.

I'm not on it, I wish I was!

I haven't caught anything big enough so I will take your word for it. On my last trip, I crimped my leader directly to the lure and the other end to a swivel. I would carry 3 or 4 differnt lures ridge up this way and just tie the swivel to my braided line. The only time I would use a split ring+ solid ring is if the ring on the lure is too sharp like on the Shibukis.

Baosabi ,

The weak link in your set up is the swivel shown in the image .

Jon .
Yessir,
I have lost quite a few fish being a cheapo and buy those barrel wrap swivels...
You can get the Spro swivels pretty cheap also. I havent had one fail yet.

Yeah swivel will crack a guide, but why would u want to wind a swivel up to the guides in the first place. Hehehe, takes practise and good 30/30 vision.

i've tied directly to the lure/popper and had a split/solid ring. yet to try a swivel.

2-3' leaders swapping in and out are not the way to go IMO....one leader connected to the braid with a Page Ranking/midknot/wind-on and then connect whatever hardware you prefer at the end. i change jigs much more often than lures/poppers so tying direct has worked fine for me.
