Young County Deer Lease and Hunting

Hey guys. After 5 or more years of concentrating on offshore fishing (no, not giving it up) I thought it time to get back to deer hunting since my oldest son is getting that age and it's time to enjoy some father/son hunting experiences.

I've never hunted this area of the state (North Texas) having grown up in S. Texas and allways hunting down there.

I looked for a family lease within a couple of hours of D/FW and found this one. It is in Young County near Loving. It is a small place (100 acres) but that's all I need as it is just for me and my two boys, one of which won't be old enough to hunt for a few years yet. It currently has 3 blinds, couple of hills, a stock tank (channel cat and bass), and a 15 acre food plot.

How is this general area in terms of productivity, deer quality, hunting pressure, etc.?

I know it's been pretty productive for the previous hunters and is currently crawling with hogs...has deer, turkey, hogs and dove. It will be a year round lease to allow me to hunt the above, teach the boys to shoot and hunt, do some bass fishing (that tank has some 5lb'rs and better), some camping, etc.

Also, what would a typical year round lease 100 acres or so in size in this area with 3 blinds lease for on a year round basis?

Thanks,
Earl

Hey Earl, normally they get $8-12 per acre.. (depending on improvements)
Thats a nice area. how far north on 114 are you?? We go by there often as Bob lives in Olney. Let me know if you need to borrow my pig trap. They will run the deer off if given the chance.
Hey Bret, yeah I may be wanting to borrow your pig trap. I'll let you know. The landowner may have one and so I may do some trapping with him, I need to check. I had read one of your posts about selling the critters - who are they sold to, a processor?

Do you have a good procesor your recommend in that area?

The place is only a couple of miles north on 16 near where 16 and Spearman meet.

I think I probably did ok on the price then, I had offered them a price that I thought was fair for a year round lease that I could hunt all game from and eventually both boys would be hunting with me. Cheryl never will hunt (doesn't want to) but will definitely love camping and catching bass and catfish from the tank.

Earl, you pass right by the processor before you get to Jermyn. hes right there on the right.. about .2of a mile past a fm road turnoff. His name is Kim.. cant think of his last name.. but hes a real nice guy.. he buys for Bel-tex out of ft worth. He only takes them live.
Cool, I'll give him a try - have you used him for deer processing too?

In S. Tex I grew up knowing the family (Harwell's) that processed at Victoria so allways used them instead of doing it myself (besides I liked their sausage)!

Earl, he doesnt process the meat.. he's only a buyer for Beltex. If you catch some bigones, it might pay to fill your feeders a couple of times.... There is a guy up in windthorst that does hog and deer processing.. I will get you his number before the season starts.
Sounds good. Thanks. Earl
