A classic video. They claim the catch is a new world record yellow fin tuna out of PV. The ending is great. The way the yellow fin is flapping on the deck along with the billy club use is second to none. A must see for all avid tuna hunters.

I had a feeling before I viewed that video that you had something up your sleeve. Those guys went to a lot of trouble to stage that video.

That video brought back memories from a Deep Sea Roundup years back. They had called off the first day of fishing due to rough weather. Gunsmoke, me and another guy just had to go out and test the waters. Hambone went overboard and we though we had lost him. After about 15 minutes, we finally got sight of him and GS grabbed the gaff. The seas were at least 12 feet and were breaking into the boat. Stupid on our part for going out, but we couldn't even find a wave small enough to turn around on.

Hambone's head would pop up every now and then but it was either a gaff in the hand or death. GS gaffed him in the palm of his hand and we pulled him overboard.

you guys are tuckin futs. why not just let him grab the gaff? or a fishing pole? or a rope? freakin gaff in the hand. crazy

they dont flop around as much if you gaff em.. Dang.. Note to self..... dont fish with GS or Mr bill if the seas are over 3ft.... I guess thats better than being lost at sea....

I know it sounds nutty, but it was our last attempt. He couldn't tread water anymore. We couldn't find him for the longest time. When we were on a crest, he was in a valley. The wind was blowing so hard we couldn't hear him yelling. We really thought we had lost him for a while.

When we saw him the last time I ran the boat full throttle as GS was on the pulpit with the gaff. I buried the pulpit a few times trying to get near him. GS got smashed into the console a few times with the force of the water. The gaffing in the hand was the only thing to do as he was sinking . He was worn out. His face was blue in color when we flopped him on the deck.

GS got him in a bear hug to make him spit out all the salt water he had taken in his mouth. We got him on his back and tied him to a cleat and rushed back to port. We were only about 3 miles offshore when this happened.

Hey, you had to do what you had to do.. The story sounds harsh, but so is mother ocean.. I think that given the same situation, I would have done the same.. I would rather have a fishing buddy be pissed at me for messing up his hand, than explaining to his wife and children that we lost their husband/father overboard because he lost his grip.. I am glad that one turned out allright for you guys.. What year was that roundup anyway???

I agree with you Bret.

If I were in the water and about to drown, gaff in my hand would mean noting compare to drowning. It will hurt as hell to get gaff in the hand; I bet his buddy will say it was a happy ending hurt.

GS, did he ever go fishing with you after that incident?

I will never forget that day. It was in the mid 80's. I would have gaffed him in the shoulder at that point. I thought he was dead as there were no air bubbles coming out his mouth. He was slowly sinking with his hand just sticking out of the water.

His father gave me a new Penn international 50 for saving his son's life. He also chewed out all 3 of us for going out in such horrible conditions. His hand was 100% the following year. I now never leave the dock without a ring buoy because of that day. It was an eye opener for all of us.

Minnow, the answer is yes. Me and Mrbill fished the next two days of the roundup and if I remember correctly we had the biggest sailfish that year. I fished with him for about 3 more years until became a pantie waist and turned into a bay fisherman. Me and Mrbill fished the next two days of the roundup and if I remember correctly we had the biggest sailfish that year. In fact, I saw him and his Father at Morton's steakhouse last week celebrating his Father's 75th birthday. His father brought the incident up and even sent a round of drinks to my table. In fact, he told me I was the most responsible young man of all his sons friends. His son started laughing his arse off.
