Wicked Technique

What is up with the crews on Wicked Tuna grabbing the line just below the first eye and seemingly pulling line to the reel? NEVER TOUCH THE MAIN LINE!

It's proven the most effective method. You gain the most line, with the least amount of effort. It's not sport fishing. This has been discussed on every forum, at least once, including here. Try doing a forum search.

You cannot physically turn the handle of the reel using as much drag as they do. You grab the line, which is typically 130# dacron or the 130# mono topshot, and pull at the same time as winding the reel. It is the only way to move the line since you cannot pump and wind with the rod in the rodholder.
Called shoveling
Works great with those setups
It's a common thing to do.
Yup. Most captains in hawaii do the same thing with YFT.
They don't like to let you fight standup unless you bring your own gear...

I will say I didnt think it could possibly help until I tried it.
SpecialK is right...used that technique a couple years back when we went after Blue Marlin out of Honolulu. Made short work of a 150#

I did search, several forums here and 2cool before the post. Guess I didn't use the right combinations of keyword(s) for the several forums. At any rate, I do follow the logic. Thanks to all.
I wondered the same thing Gary. Certainly not my cup of tea but I also dont commercial fish, or fish for BFT (yet) for that matter. BTW welcome to the forum, looks like you're a gulf coaster.

I have the same problem. Then when I post the question some wise guy will paste in about 6 old topics...lol
I am, near Galveston, would have known the answer but my largest YFT was probably 65-70# so I didn't need the gunnel!!! At 66, I may start this year, sounds like it will help !!!!

Not on this forum. :) You get polite, helpful and intelligent responses.

On some other boards I know of you would be called an idiot, publicly shamed as a total newbie and rookie and then told to not post until you became an expert and fully paid your dues. haha

I made setup for tuna guy, put 100yd coil of 200 lb jinkai into 250 pp, took a while but he said absolutely unbreakable. put on 130 locked up on unlimited rod in bb rod holder. Once fish got on spliced line never gave it more than 10 yds ever. 400 lb hard moimoi leader. Always hand pulled line on reel. At the the time I was appalled but he said fish didn't burn up that way, price wise.
