I want a spinning set up for jigging/popping tuna in both ethe Northeast and the gulf (Venice & POC). I always use conventional and Im unsure about which size stella to use

Details: Fishing in the deep northeast canyons but also popping off Venice
Fish: Yellowfin, Bluefin, Big Eye, blackfin etc
Most likely using PE6 or PE8

Somone suggested the Shimano Stella SW, your thoughts

For popping, I would go with 10000 size Stella, JMO.

i have the 20000pg

i think the 20000fa has a faster retrieve.

i just have to work it a bit more.

we gaffed a 50lber in about two minutes with the 20000 in venice, recently.

I use my SW20000 (jigging) and the SW8000(topwater).

I'm not a big guy and I find the 8000 really nice to throw lures with! I've only caught a couple of 50-60# YFT's on it so far, but it handled them easily!

Just a different view on what has worked for me so far.

20k is a 4.4:1 retrieve, and I prefer them for general use including both popping and jigging. The 10k is a 6:1 and to me is a specialty reel confined to "no line out" type situations that require ultra aggressive retrieves. These type of scenarios include GT's when popping and large AJ's and DTT's when jigging. That said I've caught plenty of AJ's w/ the 20k. The 10k also has a smaller capacity than a 20k, so much so that I would prefer not to use it for large tuna. If you really want a high speed retrieve reel, buy the 10k then buy a 20k spool for capacity.

Tom's right, the 8k is a nifty reel, and I love mine dearly, but it's not what I would reach for as a general purpose YFT popping reel. I've caught triple digit YFT that I wouldn't want to tangle w/ on my 8k.

Add in the fact that you'll be fishing in the NE and will target BFT and BE, and to me there is no choice at all: 20k all the way spooled w/ PE8 for party boats or you pick em PE8 or PE6 for a private boat. No way a 10k has the capacity to tussle w/ a med BFT.

Hi there. some information that you might have already read from otheres:

Stella SW20000PG (Power Gears) is the Japanese version of 20000FA (export version), both are slower retive ratio for jigging and deep fishing.

Stella SW10000HG (High Gears) is the Japanese version of 10000FA (export version), both have higher gear ratio for popping.

The difference between Japanese and export versions is not in the reels, reels are identical. Japanese versions come with an extra spool (worth $200 if bought alone) and two bottles of original shimano oil and grease (worth probably $50?).

If you are asking which Stella (meaning it must be a Stella), then I suggest SW20000PG. You can always use extra effort to wind faster when popping, but if you get the higher ratio (SW10000HG or 10000FA), you will lose winding torque that you can't compensate for manually, especially when reeling in a heavy fish from the deep.

If it does not have to be a Stella, then my first choice would be Daiwa Saltiga. I have both and Saltiga is superior to the Stella in many aspects; stronger gears (bronze+steel vs Duralumin+brass in stella), better sealing for drag and gear box, much smoother under heavy loads, and it seems to handle braid very well. The new $900 Accurate Twinspin gear box is a copy of Saltiga's, not Stella's.

I went to a local shop near my home and I saw the 20K japanese version with the extra spool. He is offering me a good price so I may bite on it when I get back from Texas. Speaking of Texas I was just in Tackle Unlimited in Houston and they have some sweet stuff. Just tried the reel down here as well and I am impressed with it.

Hopefully I'll get into some fish down here this weekend
