So for years in the US many Northeast lure builders have used rolls of Splined Screen Retainer tube. It’s cheap, you can cut it to size, readily available from any hardware stores, they provide excellent protection, there’s multiple size I.D. so you can use them from freshwater/inshore hooks, all the way to your bigger offshore stuff. And unlike some other types of rubber tube, these come off like a breeze with a twist (which is made easy from the added grip from the splines).

I recall being red faced after dropping down a new jig and getting hammered repeatedly without a hook up. Got the lure in and sure enough, I forgot to take off the hook protectors. Everyone else thought it was funny

I've been using them for a few years now. You can even use the spline from an old screen. They work just as well as new. And they take up less storage space than the plastic hook covers.

Yup. I've done the same. The worst ones are the clear plastic tubes.
