Drove over to Venice on Valentine’s Day (yeah wife was cool with it) to meet up with David, Jay, Jimmy, Timmy and Todd to fish three days on Todds boat. Day one we decided to fish for wahoo for 1/2 the day then move out to the Lump for some tuna action in the afternoon. First rig , first pass and both lines were screaming....good start!? Nope two AJ’s lol. Next pass another Aj and a jack crevelle...next rig...more jacks, next..more jacks and a stud blackfin. Every rig was jacked up. No wahoo and off to the Lump. Right away we were into action on chunks..mainly sharks, Kings, and Bonita but we picked off a big blackfin every now and again. David hooked one that made a big run and we knew it was the right one. 30 min later he had a big yellow in the boat. (80ish) As it was getting late last call was announced and just then I hooked a good one. After 30 minutes I had it straight up and down and coming in. We got greedy and tried to hook another since time was running out. Right at the boat Jay hooks a pig and that fish could of gone in 359 other directions without incident but instead sawed me off in a split second. We lost both fish lol. Ended the day with the one yellow and about 10 blackfin. Day 2 we decided to swordfish for half a day and then return to the Lump. No love at all. Tried both Bonita belly and squid. Might of had one whack on the squid. About 1130 we returned to the Lump. Water looked dirtier than the day before. Instantly we were covered up in sharks. We hooked and fought sharks non stop. Couldn’t get away from them. Ended the day with 1 black, 2 Kingsa ton of sharks and feeling of being defeated. We fished hard without much to show. We had one more day to fish and had a hard time coming up with a plan. Guys were sick of pulling on sharks...after a lot of debate Todd made the call...we came to tuna fish and we were headed back to the Lump. Not everyone was excited lol. We took a piss break on the way out and a few off us dropped a jig...got a 20 pound snapper on a striker tackle flat fall... When we arrived at the Lump the water looked better than the day before. Instantly we had blackfins and Bonita’s in the in the slick. Then bam....Todd’s hooked up and it’s screaming, he handed me his rod (I’ve had a run of bad luck and he pitied me lol). After a short fight we put a nice yellow in the boat. Next David has a screamer... he boats a 130ish tuna (maybe bigger?). We set up again and this time I hook up with a fish screaming east bound and then instantly Timmy hooks up with west bound Fish! Timmy was getting dumped so we gave chase to his while I towed my fish letting out 600 yards of line! Once over top Timmy’s I got lucky and my fish came right at me. First Timmy’s then mine right after and they were studs. Timmy’s being the biggest fish of the trip. Next drift Jimmy gets a stud and made short work of another 150 class tuna. Same time Jay had a big one on but got chewed off. Time for one last drift and I got lucky with the hot hand and got bit again. Ended with the smallest fish of the day but still a beauty. Finished the day with 6 stud yellows with Timmy’s being the biggest at 159. Also had 12 big blackfins. What an awesome time. We laughed more than we caught and we caught a lot (at least the last day) Lesson learned.....Every days different.
