Man, If I were only as close as Mobile. It's about 11 hours one way from Austin, Tx to Venice pulling the boat, 10 without. Still, I'd like to get down there for a few days in Feb before Lump season is over. How long does it take you to drag to Venice from Alabama? Good luck on the weather and the Lump when ya go. If I do get a chance to get down there, I'm sure we'd bump into each other. It's kind of a small world.

Fred,
It's 4 hours from my house to Cypress Cove Marina pulling the boat. We just take our time so it's not to bad. By the time we get 20 miles south on New Orleans it's usualy miller time anyway.

Since I had the twin 150 four strokes installed it's a whole differant ride. Fast, powerful and the same fuel as a single. I just installed a leaning post from Nautical Design in PA and love it. It has 6 rear tackle drawers with locking doors and side doors with shelves and storage under it.

I think I talked to you buddy and told him I would post from Venice if I could and let him know if I had an opening. He was working with HFH.

It dosen't look good for this weekend but we are looking at possibly leaving Sunday or Monday. We will be there if the weather is fishable. When I get off in the morning I have a fishing window until the 28Th.

Think flat seas!!

Well guys what a differance a year makes!

Made it over to Venice on Saturday and the weather was nasty. So was Sunday be we made a run down Tiger pass and was met with high wind and nasty seas. More then we wanted to deal with for 35 mile to the lump so the call was made to watch the race. Ribeyes and all the trimmings and some fine Gin drinks made that a great call.

Monday we ran the river and made it to the Lump by 7AM. Pretty sloppy but fishable. We chunked hard till 1:30 for 4 boneheads and 3 kings. I saw 1 blackfin caught and that was that. I hate to say it but we broke out the light rods and pulled a ton of Beeliners before we left. We pulled fast runners half way to the river for not and called it a day.
Come to find out there hadn't been a yellow caught in close to a week. I guess the fish have moved off with the influx of the cold water.

Boy I feel for the folks that have charters the next few days or weeks if the fish don't return. Just no fish there.

With no fish on the Lump and a front come in we came back to Mobile Tuesday AM.

I sure hope someone start catching some.

Nothing you can do if the fish aren't around. What makes is worse is the fact that you traveled to a great place at a great time of year. You should have been bending rods all day long. Whatever the YF's were feeding on, left the lump for some reason. This has been an off two months for the lump. You might be right about them not coming back for a few weeks.

The weird thing is there are some YF's in the 85 to 100 pound class being caught off Southern Rock out of Port Aransas right now during the daylight hours. I heard that even a head boat called "Scat Cat" caught a YF at Southern on a 9 hour trip. That is very rare for that boat. YF's are never at Southern this time of year. Southern is only about 35 miles offshore. The floaters are loaded with BF's but no YF's. Something is causing the fish to move from their normal routines.

Sometimes it's the difference that a day makes... I know that ya'll have heard, "you should have been yesterday..." We fished the Lump 2 days last year in late Feb. The fish had moved offshore to some of the floaters.. Maybe things will turn your way and the tuna will present themselves. Heck, I would just love to be camped out for a week or so down there.

I will have to say that the spotty fishing and cold weather alongside of the lack of amnities in Vencie caused me to skip the Lump this year. I have chose to instead fish Nov and June outta Fourchon...

I'm glad that the boat is running well under the new power. I hope to catch you this summer outta DI.
