US Service Cost: careful buying used high end Daiwa vs Shimano....

2504 Views 19 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  JiggaPleez
Just wanted to warn you guys in the US buying high end Daiwa reels and future repair cost (Saltigas / Certates). Daiwa USA will NOT service a reel unless you will do the full repair replacing expensive parts they deemed "worn". I am not even sure if their new 5 year service plan covers wear and tear on gears. No one else can realistically service these reels due to the MQ body and Magseal oil. Shimano platinum service basically replaced the gear set on my 20k SWB for free... Love the Daiwa reel but the cost to service is almost as much as the reel itself...

Reason I pretty much always prefer shimano vs daiwa. Sent them some stuff years ago and was an issue and cost a fortune. I pretty much just keep the OG saltiga conventionals as theyre built to last and easy to work on
They want to a you have to send us back your old reels for service model. Problem is the parts are not free (understandable if that's how they want to run the business). What bothers me is they would not even clean / service if you decline to replace the parts. I even inspected the pinion and it's got plenty of life. Reel is just noisy due to a rusted magseal side plate bearing
There’s plenty of small time reel repair shops throughout the country who are able to repair Daiwa and Shimano reels. Sending them to Daiwa or Shimano is not always the best option

You can also buy the side plate removal tool on ebay aswell as the mag oil
I saw they have them for the 2020 Saltiga and Cert. Trying to find the tool for the 2017 Saltiga Bay Jigger and it is non existent. Someone might have to custom make it.
I'll never buy another 'High End' Daiwa reel either...
Thanks for the confirmation...
Anybody want a Daiwa Isla/Catalina 5000 that needs servicing for $400 ?
Are you the original owner b/c why are you being charged for the clean/service? Their 5 year warranty and their 5 year clean/service plan have different exclusions. If you are the original owner, you'd qualify for the clean/service which does not exclude wear and tear-just inaequate care. So unless they're claiming you didn't send your reel in for years or had salt intrusion and didn't send it in soon enough I don't see how they're trying to charge you for parts. This is kind of bull shit b/c they're telling shops this is their response to their history of shitty repair service and Shimano's Platinum Serivce.

They charged me the $60 fee since I got it second hand which I am fine with. Ok, I see you are saying they excluded the wear and tear part for the original owner when sending it in under the 5 year plan.

FYI, this would not apply to all the JDM reels guys are getting for cheaper vs US shops.

There you go, to the original buyer you would have not paid a dime, in fact to original buyer annual service - not break fix but just typical grease clear etc is totally free and is shipping back to you totally free. I cannot think of a better deal for the consumer I think your "upset is" you bought a used reel you did not do your due diligence ie take it apart and inspect it before buying just like you would not buy a used car without taking it to a mechanic to check it first. I'd say the error is on your side, you tried to save some money and failed its not the reel it was the transaction sorry

I told them to clean and service the reel and don't replace the parts and I will gladly pay the $60. They told me it's all or nothing. It's the all or nothing that I am upset about because they won't even service a reel that requires proprietary grease and oil unless you agree to also replace very expensive parts. Also, good luck after the 5 years is up and replacing $300 main gear sets or $40 magseal bearings. My grip with Daiwa was never about the free service, it's the fact that they have made repairs very DIY unfriendly and will not be flexible in doing repair work itself unless you do all of the work order
Well, I was kind of eyeing another Saltiga but your post got me a little worried so last Wednesday I packed up my reel and sent it into Daiwa. It was received by them Saturday (service is open Mon-Fri). I didn't hear anything so I called Tuesday afternoon-to their credit, an actual person in service picked right up and said that their turn around is same to next day BUT not until your reel is checked in which can take 3-5 days. I thought that was some bull shit but they called again Wednesday, said the reel was checked in, service was completed the same day and sent back to me Fedex 2-day. Just recieved the reel today (Friday) so all in all it was less than 9 full days for turn around and I wasn't charged. I did call out something to be looked at and wasn't charged for that either. Reel had some grease on it from greasy hands but otherwise seems like new.

US. Although with Daiwa they had told me in the past that if I bought a JDM reel from a US shop, they would honor the warranty.
Not sure about service in the US, but in Japan Shimano service is top notch. Do not have to worry about the crap mag oil and monocock body bs. Stella, TP all the way baby

Are the Digitaka Stella reels JDM or US models?

Everything on Digitaka is JDM.
All the hoops to jump through with customer service once confused me also, but not any longer. ;)
