Here is a Pic of two nice slobs that Capt. Devlin Rousel caught a few nights ago. He was fishing out of Venice, La. He told me they weighed in at 218 and 176. www.reelpeace.com

i know the Big E moves around after the drift... but is it in any way possible to set out a deep line for swords??? is the attraction factor the green light, and 12" squid?

The ONLY way to catch em is to try. They take skill locate and boat,and special tackle$$$$ that helps improve your chances. The only way is to try. The Big E or any other head boat is no the place for it. How many times a year do you figure you get to fish(offshore). You have to be willing to pay for fuel, ice and everything else and then come back with nothing in the cooler. If you can spend the money and be happy with coming back with no "meat fish", then give swordin a try. Kinda like Marlin fishin.

i see the risk involved.. If I get bored, I may try. How cool would that be though= to catch a sword on a headboat.. LOL!

·about 5 years ago we had a fellow on the dolphin catch a swordfish. it was barely legal and was caught at about 150ft deep while we were drifting for tuna....rick

it make syou wonder if some of the "UFO"'s that sound without slowing were swords... my understanding is they will spoool you in a second without the right equipment. No wonder Jared's hooked.. thats a heck of a fight!!

My Group caught one out of Venice with Captain Mike Ellis, now with reel peace. He was pretty specific with his setups, Really Good fisherman. Basically Take a 200 pound windon leader. Big hook and a squid. Below the Loop to loop probably 15-20' away from the squid, put a blinking light. Disco Light! Rubberband about 16oz of lead to your main line above the windon, Breakaway style. Then let out 150'-300' of line (deep) and attach a clear 2-liter bottle with a glowstick inside again breakaway style with rubberband. drift away from boat, Repeat. Obviously you couldn't run more than one line on a head boat. You want to sit on ledge, point or other upwelling creating structure.
Personally I don't think the Hydroglow does much to help your 200' line especially when it is played out 100 yards away from the boat. That light that is 20' from your squid, Now that is a different story.

Look at how thick their tails are right before the tail fins!!!
Most of us know how hard a 100# YFT can pull; but look at the relatively more potential power in those beasts!
That coupled with their soft mouths seems to make an awesome challenge!

Be careful at night with the swordie's. I've had a few hairy moments with those broadbills. Very powerful fish and if they hit the boat green, watch out.
They are hard on the gelcoat, angler and gaff man. I've seen a guy get yanked overboard with a huge flying gaff that he couldn't get to release in time. That broadbill slashing sideways can put 1/4" deep ruts in your boats fiberglass. Sword fishing is a different ballgame. If you're impatient, don't play the game.

was it that long ago Mcgolpher.? The fellows name was Frank and he snagged it by accident. Was just barely legal .Got to see him on another trip and he said the fish didnot eat well at all.

yeah... I gave up on the idea of a sword from a headboat.. lol.. with all the line out, the muscles the sword posesses... I dont think it would be smart to catch one with so many other people around..lol. I will cook, and occasionally catcha fish.
