Found a interesting site made of an australian guy that tests fishinglines both in the lab. and in the field.
You can actually send him a sample of a line and he will run a test on it.
Might be good reading before you spend a lot of money.

Nice site. The ABS vs diameter test generally confirms that 80% of the braid are essentially the same once the coating wears off. Braid strength is a function of it's diameter.

The knot test is interesting, proving once again that it is not the knot, but the knot tyer. My experience with a mid knot, GT knot, and FG knot is a lot higher than his test. And it doesn't surprise me since he is fairly inexperience at tying those knots, leading to lower breaking strength.
