Other than line capacity "but with spectra w/topshot".
what would make the TI16 the better reel?

Fonz,

Nothing. The 12 is a great little reel. If you don't need the 16 size, then buy the 12. I think I own a Tiagra 12. If I find it, I'll post some pics next to other reels around the same size.

Would a tiagra 20 be able to tame +150lb BFTs. If yes how many metres of line you think it will take before slowing down say at 30lb drag?

The problem is that ill be fishing near structures!! usually if the fish takes over 150m its game over

only the tiagra 16 and 130 have the twin disk
and yes, the drag is sufficient
use 100 hollow, splice in 130 and short topsh0t flouro

Bingo! we have a winner, you hit it right on the head.
twin disk and a lrs drag curve, I have 2 and just bought a 30 fin-nor Santiago
for under $400,with a 45 lb strike drag and a 70 lb full lock down you can't beat it, this will be my biggest reel , I got rid of all my 80's and 50's.
I have caught BFT up to 300lbs on the Tiagra T16, spooled with 500 yrds of JB 100 hollow and 100' of 130 lb jinkia topshot ,with a liitle work from Cal's
I get 30lbs at strike and over 40lbs full.
definitely go for the 16.:)
