During my trip in NC my drags started sticking toward the end of the day and I am in search of new drags. I emailed smooth drag to get some carbontex drags but they said they do not carry for my reel. I have an older stella 16000 japanese model. The printed name on the reel sayd Stella 16000. Do any of the other stella have the same carbon tex drag as my reel I can purchase? I am going to take it apart and send smooth drag my drag setup so they can make me some but if the stella 20000 or 10000 is the same then I can just order.

I own Stella 16000F ( 1998 model ) and have retrofited the drag washers with carbontex , just order 4 pcs. of 25mm ( OD ) x 5mm ( ID ) x 0.6 mm of carbontex drag washer per set of spool with Cal grease as option .

here is a list of the 25 smaller drag ht-100 drag washers that penn makes. the washers are listed by part #, followed by price as listed in pennparts.com as of this date (2/13/05), followed by the inner diameter in millimeters, the outer diameter in millimeters and the thickness in millimeters. what follows after that is a listing of the common reels that use this drag washer.

for the engineers in the group, my methodology is as follows. i bought an "el cheapo" 0-6" (150mm) "performance tool" digital caliper (stock #w80153) from my local auto parts store for $20. i have a plano storage box filled with 26 different penn ht-100 drag washers purchased from pennparts.com. i reached into the box and grabbed one washer at random. i did a single measurement for the inner diameter if round or a minimum and a maximum if the inside hole was hexagonal in shape. i did a single measurement of the outer diameter, not including the "keys" if the drag washer was keyed. "keyed" washers are so noted. i also did a single measurement of the thickness. the actually mm's displayed on the digital screen was listed, although the results should be considered accurate only to the "tenth" of a millimeter, not the "hundreth."

measure the stock drag washers in your reel, compare the dimensions (don't forget to account for thickness) and order drag washers accordingly. your local shop should be able to obtain the washers for you and also obtain cal's drag grease. parts are also available at pennparts.com. good luck. alan

How do I get the bridge pin out? Do I just tap it out with something small or is there a special tool? Do not want to break anything as it is first time.

if it's the cross pin i'm thinking of, it does not need to come out. you remove the side plate and remove the screw that holds the base of the spool shaft. then the entire spool shaft comes out, cross pin and all. can you post a photo or given me a key # and a link the the schematics? alan

I figured it out as it was a small screw holding it on, here is my stella 16000 drag system I believe taken apart.

This is a 3 drag system shown on smooth drag.

Mine does not look anything like the 3 drag at all. Is my reel missing something or is my stella 16000 japanese version of lesser drag system?

The one you need to change is the one in the spool n not the one shown in the image .

So Dawn says she is going to take a while to get the drags drawn and cut up. Where can I purchase stock drags for the time being for my japanese model reel?

Interesting. Up to a while ago, Smoothies did have drags listed for the Stella 16000. I called Dawn up and asked her why they only listed a three stack where my 16000 had a 4 stack. She did not know why but she sent me 4 washers instead of the 3.... no extra costs. When I went to install them, I found that the washers were thicker than the stock.... the od and id was correct but the extra thickness made it impossible to get the four washers in under the spring retainer clip. I just used all four washers anyways and moved the retainer clip up into the next slot up. Of course, the retainer clip needed to be openned up a bit so that it would not just lay there. For now it works but my thoughts are that Dawn removed the washers from the web site due to the problem with the thickness. Just a thought.

She is sending me 4 drags as she did you and also she told me the thickness is double of the stock and told me to try to make it a 3 stack drag. IF anything I will set it up like yours. Have you had any issues with it having the retainer clip in a different location?

No issues so far with the retaining clip. It is under the drag adjustment knob which keeps it in place during usage. I assume that the retaining clips only function when the spool is not mounted onto the reel with the knob in place.
