I am thinking about getting a star drag reel and I am looking at Saltiga 35 or Trinidad 16N; any one have a recommendation or thoughts about either?

    I mostly fish GOM/S FL about 150' - 200', sometimes out to 300'

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Can't go wrong with either.
    I have 3 saltigas 30T and newer 15 and TN 14a
And 10a all killer reels. I find the daiwas to be slightly smoother. The trinidads could use a hair more drag, but other than that, all great reels.

For bottom fishing I'd get the saltiga . The Trinidads higher gear just over the course of a day loses out to the saltiga when cranking weights and heavy fish. my reels spend almost all their time fishing the same waters but out to 1100ft in GOM. But I'm a little biased . I have 6 saltigas and one Trinidad\ocea .

A saltiga 40 on 50lb braid caught this fish in GOM. I think I'd have had a harder time with a Trinidad for sure

I just wish they made the new 35 star in the 5-1 gear ratio. Best I can tell only the 40 and 50 have it. 35 is 6.4-1

  5. For DT the 40T is my favourite. It is even adequate for Pulley Ridge Lite.Had them for a very long time and no issues except upgraded to smooth drag.

They do make it, jdm version has 35 or 35H.

    I have the 35N-sj, 5.1:1.

I wonder why they aren't selling it in the USA?

Saltiga star drag JDM 35n-SJ is 5:1 but a lot smaller than a US 35 size, FYI

Yes the N version is smaller. I debated 5.1 and 6.4 for a while and glad to go with with 5.1.

Really like the SJ handle for jigging but not the best for casting.

Low gears make fishing easier. Still love my Trinidads. Just buy them now JDM. Ocea Jigger 2000NRPG is 16N size with low gears.

However, if looking for the most torque. Willing to step up in size. Consider the Trinidad 40/40N or better yet find the OJ 4000/5000P. Cranking machines. You get used to the size and weight.

Is the 35N smaller than the US model or the 35N-SJ ????

I believe the 35N and the 35n-SJ are exactly the same size, just a different handle. Both are JDM models. Both 5:1 ratios. Both star drag.
They are both quite a bit smaller than the USA lever drag model SALD35-2SPD.

I think I posted pics of the 35N-SJ next to various reels including the SALD35-2SPD in my thread about the 35N-SJ last year.
