So I just watched the dvd on the trevalas and first thing that comes to mind is rush and buy one,might be b/c I am an easy sell,who knows. LOL Anyways, reading through alot of the forums didnt see much positive. Question is, with the 58XXH's is it a beefy enough blank to bring in a fish?Would it be suitable for fishing the big e? Or is it to light of a blank? Will it cause fight time to be longer or less?I know in the video they say yes,but come on,what used car salesman tells you his car is a lemon. Just curious as to what any of you all think who have used it,or seen it used. Thanks.

If you prefer to horse a fish the Trevala is NOT for you. If you are willing to allow the rod to do the work they're Good, but I suspect some of the other new jigging rods are better.
Rick hates Trevalas and I like mine, but we both fish differently.

Though that rod is rated to 200lbs (i believe) it has such a quick taper that it makes it really hard to muscle fish. Also, I have seen reports of the rod bending so much that the line will actually cut into the foregrip. Personally speaking from the trevalas I've used, I don't like them. They are nice and light to jig with but provide no backbone to muscle in fish IMO.

Makes sense,the rod looks pretty slim,havent gotten my hands on it yet. My uncle and a coworker saw them at Cabelas and bent the tip to the floor. They had the shimano people there and they gave them a pamphlet with a dvd on them. Alot of what they say makes sense,about it giving alot of movement to the jig,the DVD just makes me want to buy one lol. But as big as I am I would rather horse the fish in as quick as I can, from what I am seeing the calstar is the way to go,can be a popping and jigging rod right? Would be nice to have a rod for both,but if I was going to go the Trevala route I would prob put a Salist on it,and get another rod for popping and put the Fin Nor on it. I am still up in the air on the Trev,and I respect all of you alls opinions on the board so hoping I could be swayed either way. If the majority go against and recommend a calstar,what rod would you recommend?Don't really want to have to go through getting it custom made,any production rods with the cal blanks?Or perhaps the OTI rod,will that be ready in Feb?

There are some folks that like the Trevala rods, and some folks don't. The one thing I'll tell you about the Trevalas is that they are made to help impart action to a certain sized jig, and to get you bit. Smaller fish are no big deal to bring in, but the bigger models, well, that's a different story.
The line rating on the rods is also kind of deceptive. A rod can say that it will fish 80 to 200lb spectra, but that isn't to say it is meant to fish for 200lb fish, it just means that size spectra will work. The lure weight it is meant to fish is more important because too heavy a jig, and you don't get good action. Same thing if a jig is too light, you won't be able to settle on a good rhythm and you won't get bit.
For the money, I think the rods are great, I've got 3 of them. But you've gotta put in quite a bit of time actually jigging before you can really tell what's the best rod for you and the type of fishing you are doing. None of the Trevalas will let you horse in a fish.

Thanks for the reply,pretty much put into words what I was thinking in my head. Really am just debating with myself. I do feel that a rod made for the butterfly jig would be a good choice,and I am sure if they could have made it a bit more beefy then they would of. I think the only way to get the action optimal for the jig is to have the rod the way it is.I think the only way to really dislike something or like it is first hand expeirence. So I think I may end up getting one. I,for some odd reason,kept thinking I was going on my first 52 hour in may,turns out its sept. lol long long time away,so perhaps I will be able to fit one in between now and sept. Would be nice,that way the first time I go can be a trial and error run,think I would really enjoy the trip in Sept. alot more. Again,thanks for all the input,I respect and try to soak up as much as you guys care to offer.

Does not seem like it could handle a very big fish but looks can be deceiving. I really liked the over the counter Lifetime warrenty on it. I am going to test it out this weekend in PINS,hopefully I can put a big black drum on it,just to get a feel. Also going to be casting gulp swinbaits off the jetties. Think I might even use it for bass fishing,seems to have alot of different uses,but ya,I would have to see it for myself to believe it could bring in a tuna.

I agree with Snagged, I have the MH and it is a snapper or blackfin rod. Consider the XH model for more serious fishing.

I've got a never used Trevala 58xxh that is collecting dust in a closet. The selling tool that made me buy it was the lifetime warranty. The problem is that I have never taken the rod for a boat ride to date. For 149 bucks, it's really a good deal. I plan on using it for a guest rod. The Trevala's don't have the backbone for my style of fishing.
I'm not one who spends much time on a fish. I don't like fishing with people on boats that take their sweet time bringing in a fish. And then they go on and on about how much fun it is to use light tackle. I see it as a waste of everybody's time. Get it in the freaking boat so we can get the lines out again.

i just got the xh version. i was using the mh and it is very soft. im hoping that the xh will be able to handle some yft. well see. for the money (all i can afford right now) it seemed to good to be true. i will be testing it out at the lumps in la. next week. i will also be putting the mh to the test as well. im not to concerned, as i very rarely get to fish tuna over 75 lbs.

I saw and held one of Snagged's travalla rods on the quatro tuna trip. I saw how he used it, and how to load it up to fish it the right way. I didnt find it to be the suitable way for myself to fish knowing "how" I like to fish. I purchased a Sea Magic rod from Islanders tackle for ~$155. It is perfect for my style and still has the action I desire to make a jig dance... havent used it in the "real world" yet... only in the warehouse... lol. I mated it with an AVET LX 6:1 (single speed). I will always keep this rig as a backup. it is just TOOOOOO LIGHT to not keep it. I have loaded it with a 25 pound tractor wieght and horsed it around .. action is NICE! and I could bounce the wieght and still have some ability to horse it around. I wont fish with more than 25# of drag on that AVET.
I due agree with "get the freakin fish in the boat!" crank down the drag and put the effort in it. I understand every fish is different as every creature has a different personality. Some will take longer than others... but catch 100 lbers on 30 pound gear will result in some P'Oed teammates(fellow anglers)

This rod is not going to be used for party boats,just bought it to test out the action of the rods,if I like it I will pick up the 58xxh,I just want something longer for casting at the jetties this weekend. I actually think I will keep this as a freshwater rod and peir/jetty fishing when it comes to salt,maybe a trout rig or something of that sort. If I like it when I get some fish on,I'll prob pick up the 58xxh spinner *edit-or the 66xxh baitcasting version.

the spinner trevala rods dont have the proper size first eye on them for casting effectively(what I have read from reports).

Ya,didn't think I was getting as much distance as I could have out of it,but even with a 3/4 plug I could still get more then enough distance than I need.Weather is nasty here in Austin today,was going to take it out to town lake and catch some bass on it,lol just really anxious to put a fish on it,any fish.
