Budget? I’ve got a nice Thrasher TRMF76H Rod built by Zack @ Zacks Custom Rods in Westport, MA with a Daiwa Saltiga 18K on it but I could probably use a 14K to save some weight.
Popping setup for northeast
Looking for recommendations for a popping setup for the northeast. Ny to Ri waters. Thanks guys

You guys have those big blue fin out there! I have a PE 10 & 12 setup with 200lb leader.

yea. budget. you’re (seriously) looking at a range of $400 to $2,000 including tried, true, proven to be capable used.

I was thinking a twin power 14000 on a shimano grappler rod. Opinions?
fine but if i was buying a grappler i’d put a gossa on it. personally - in the 14k+ size - to me its either gossa or stella. i don’t see much bang for the buck in a twin power. if i was gonna spend the $$, i’d rather spend the difference between a gossa and a twin power on a better rod or a couple great lures like a deep seductress.I was thinking a twin power 14000 on a shimano grappler rod. used a centaur combat arm 7'7 last yr with stella 14 k... had fish up to 90lbs on it no problem
whoa, whoa, whoa whoa! I was just using my setup as an example. I don’t want to sell it! Well maybe the Saltiga, I hate the color! I had Zack put Fuji Titanium Torzite guides on it and it is a beaut! The blue and gold just doesn’t look good on it though. I’m actually picking up another I had him build conventional for me this weekend at the Boxborough show. He has inventory, at least he did. I think you’ve got a nice set up there - I’d slap some cortland c16 60# or Seguar Threadlock 50# and you’ll be ready to go. The grappler is an awesome rod-the blank on it is great. If you want to spend a few more bucks, the Ocea Plugger MH or Black Hole Nano 8’ also have great blanks but better components than the Grappler.I was thinking a twin power 14000 on a shimano grappler rod. How’s Threadlock on a spinning reel? I use it on most of my conventional reels but I was worried it would twist too much on a spinning reel. It’s my favorite braid.- I’d slap some cortland c16 60# or Seguar Threadlock 50# and you’ll be ready to go.

Haha they all twist on a spinning reel, I think you just notice it more on larger hollow lines b/c you can see the weave more than on a solid line. I like it on mine-the ABS on it is in the mid/low 70's (at least the batch I have). In my opinion, Jerry Brown (white color) is more suple and Cortland packs the best but Threadlock casts really well, is wildly consistent and you can get 600yd for $110 on amazon which puts it a good deal cheaper than the others.How’s Threadlock on a spinning reel? Like I said, I‘ve got both 50lb and 80lb Threadlock on some of my reels and I just love it (3 VISX16’s with 80lb and 2 Penn 113N’s, 2 Makaira SEa 10ii’s and an Avet MXJ Raptor with the 50lb). I‘ve been tying a bunch of wind-on’s with the 50lb (25-60lb mono and flouro) but I never thought to put it on my spinning reels because I thought the line twist would be more obvious with the hollow braid. I might give it a try when I buy another spinning reel. I made a loop of the 50lb and pulled it to the breaking point and my scale actually broke just over 70lbs! It’s bad ass line! My current favorite for solid braid is Sufix 832 in 50lb and 65lb Ghost color. I like all white line (I use black and red sharpie’s to mark my line every 50’ for red and 100’ for black). I do have a few reels with JB 80lb hollow multi-color as well but for some reason I keep coming back to Threadlock. spinning reels :
i like solid 65# on my casting set ups. surface lure / popper (line out of the water) knot (knot never goes in the top guide) a short 60# fluoro leader. for subsurface lures (line in the water), biminy twist to 2-3m wind on so wind on serve stays above the reel. hollow 80# on jigging set ups. splice in a leader or loop to loop a wind on. 3-4m 80-100# fluoro leader on jigging set ups. terminal tackle all the same - 150# small swivel to a 150# split ring to the lure.

I love my twin power 14000. Highly recommend it. As far as braid goes...JB is the best casting braid for a spinning reel, bottom line. Go w 100 lb (thinner than 80 lb) or 60 lb c16 which is also thinner than most others in 60 lb class. I have a hard time buying rods that have a 1 year warranty. I would look at the howk bullfighter series, Centaur, phenix meglodon, or a van staal vs 70-325 (if you can find 1).
