will be using popping rod for the first time tomarrow. i usually dont put the jigging rod down. when would you make the decision to pop? obviously when bait is busting, but any other times. if we're marking fish mid water column, is it worth trying? also, can wahoo or kings become a problem causing cut offs. do you still rig w/ mono when hoo is around? thanks for the help.

In the GOM, at the deep floating platforms, fling a popper as soon as you get there and during the first drift. This is even when you don't see a lot of activity on top and especially if you do. a lot of times the first drift of a platform will have the best popping activity until a true topwater bite materializes. Keep a popper or rod with a swim bait ready at all times.
