To kick off this board, I thought I'd post some pics of some very cool poppers that I've seen from other sites:

Hi,

I am new to this site & hoping to learn some things. I live in the northeast and belong to noreast.com but I fish ALOT out of Texas & the gulf where my company is located. I have recently been bit by the jigging and popping bug although I bait fish alot.

Great site, I recently just purchased a accurate 665 2 speed paired with a Dragonfly 400g rod for jigging. What do you think about the rod selection, i did read the review but look forward to your comments

Hey gman!

Welcome to 360tuna!

I visit the Nor'east board from time to time and we're glad to see you here!

I'll be fishing with Kilsong in June on his 80 hour charter out of Port Fourchon, La. on The Caribbean Sea.

The Gulf of Mexico is a great fishery and you're not alone with the popjig bug!LOL

I handled the Dragonfly rod at the Houston fishing show and it looked like a well-crafted rod! Paired with your Accu 2-speed should make a great jigging combo.

Those look like the poppers that Randy sells on anglers pro shop. The hammer head poppers look like GT killers but I'd be afraid to lose one at $45 a pop. Then again no risk, no fish :D

Can't forget the Tuna Hunters and new OTI Komodos for good quality/lower cost.

Had a productive trip, caught alot of Yellowfin, some really big amberjacks. Good times. Going to Miami swordfishing next weekend

I hate when business gets in the way of fishing!

Good luck on your Miami swordfish trip! Do post a report with pictures as I hear the swordfish have made a huge comeback in Florida.

Hopefully, Jared will find them here soon!

I recently just purchased a accurate 665 2 speed...

gman, where'd you find the 665 2spd? I've been looking daily waiting for them to come out; no one I've found has them yet. This is my next reel so would love to find it b4 next trip in May.

Thanks.

Houston is like my second home, i just got back from there yesterday. All Accurate dealers can order it now. I bought mine from True World Tackle in New Jersey, he ordered it for me last week. I am expecting it on Thursday. I spoke directly to Accurate yesterday and they confirmed they would be shipping out in the begining of next week as they were ordered. Hope that helps

May be moving to the sugerland area

Welcome to 360tuna, gman. :)
I was very disappointed too when you had to cancel the Gulf trip due to work schedule as you were so excited about the trip.
In fact, there were several guys on Noreast I love to have them on the trip, but they couldn't go also because there are 3 day deepwater Viking charters and Baja mothership charters to Sea of Cortez among members in late June and they committed already.

When I visted True Wolrd Tackle to pick up a prototype Cosmotech blank for the test, they told me you were at the shop. :)
You are going to love Accurate 665 two speed. I checked the new Accurate 870 two speed and it doesn't have much binding problem upto 25 lbs drag at strike. The new round knot is much better than the knot on the single speed reel. But you also have option to get ATD's knob for $55 or get after market custom knob by Jigging Master.

I am going to test one of 870 and 665 two speed on the upcoming NZ trip next month.

I knew you would be over here as well. You are the traveling jigging pro, one day hopefully i will have the pleasure of fishing with you. I am really excited about jigging, I love learning new things, hopefully my bait success will follow me.

The guys at Trophy Tackle were very nice. I believe they were showing me a jigging rod made by Lamiglass. VERY LONG though, although Im sure the extra length gives you many advatages on a party boaty.

I ordered the ATD handle in case i dont like the round knob, they should be there at the same time. I wa afraid of the 870 2 sped as he only had a single speed narrow and i couldnt see how anyone could catch a bluefin on that small reel although Im sure they do it all the time.

I belive we live pretty close to each other as I live in Fairfield

I found most reel manufacturers give wrong information on the line capacity on their products, especiallly for braided line.
They advertise that the tiny 870 can hold 330 yards of 30 lbs mono, but I doubt it can hold over 280 yards of 30 lbs mono.
According to Accurate line converting table, the reel can hold over 500 yeads of 80 lbs braided line !!! Just ridiculous.

I would say the 870 barely hold 280 yards of 80 lbs braided line with some room for topshop. You can catch bluefin tuna upto 150 lbs on 870 with 25 lbs drag, but if bigger bluefin show up, the line capacity of the reel can be a problem.

Your home is about 15 minutes drive from my office. :)
You sometimes meet at Dunkin' Donut on Rt 46 near GW bridge after work and talk about fishing. :)
