I headed up to Point Pleasant very early this morning to get at shot at the migrating Bluefin and some Stripers. I fished on the Renegade, a very nice 29' Topaz with twin diesels.

Once we cleared the inlet we found flat seas and many many birds working a few miles off the beach. We raced toward the largest landfill and started throwing poppers. Bluefin where breaking water, Stripers where too

Second cast I came tight on a nice sized bass on a YoZuri Sashimi Bull in Flying Fish color

Once the crew had enough of catching Stripers and watching the porposing Tuna jeering us we set off to chase them. We had to wait as the Capt said the Bass bite first and then the tuna

We threw stick baits at them for a while and no takers, so we downsized to very small metals more the size of the sand eels the bass and blues where homed in on.

Bingo

Just as the Capt put the boat in gear to move to another spot - fish on!

Mark fought the tuna for awhile and got back most of the line, he was more than halfway done but I think the tension and pressure from Capt/Mate/Crew was very strong as the Capt kept reminding us how important this tuna was and not to mess it up. Somehow I get passed the rod for the end game - it felt like being handed an overfull glass of coffee and having to walk it upstairs on white carpet as the fish was on #40 leader "from last trip" so I was very careful to take time with the fish.

We raised him three times and I knew from prior experience we had to end the game very soon or he would end it for us. As the Capt backed down on him I reeled and thumbed the spool for some extra drag. Into the BOX BABY! Every bit of #90 if not more - this fish was fat and his belly was packed with sand eels. I do not think these fish are moving down the coast so fast, as in prior years you see packs of tuna - very determined to get somewhere, they do not stop even to look at your bait. However today the tuna where jumping almost like in Cape Cod "for fun" they did not school up the most we saw were maybe 4 fish together but everywhere they where breaking water for most of the morning. It nice the tuna drive away the bluefish!

Fish caught on Stingo 3 oz (props Dave from Stingo is a good guy) Torium 40 (?) and Daiwa Saltiga Jigging Rod. Main line was #60 Mono which I think helped pull it off. I think in this particular case if fish was on braid with the way he shook his head at the end and did the usual flip - out the leader would have parted.

Man we are going to have good sashimi today, Bluefin, Bass, and Sea Bass the three B's - MJ come by for lunch today...

Thanks guys it was a great day no doubt. I liked fishing with Capt Mike and I'd certainly like to give it another shot Monday or Tuesday after this system moves through

I think your post merging there Pal :D

I've got a spot locked in for day after Thanksgiving with Capt Mike probably not the best day - will be crowded out there if conditions are good. I'd prefer a weekday next week - MJ what day you leave for the Holiday ?
