Newbie to the Tuna Game - Houston/Galveston Area
I am wanting to finally try out doing a Tuna 30 Hour partyboat trip out of Galveston area.

I am new to the Offshore/Tuna fishing. Grew up freshwater and bay fishing my whole life.
I need some help on many things.

1. What Rods and Reels do I need for a party boat trip. Examples or sizes that work best.
2. What are the gear/hooks/jigs/lures/setups yall recommend.
3. What is the etiquette for Tuna fishing on a party boat vs just a normal 12 hour straight down fishing for Snapper.
4. What are your tips and tricks for just making the trip more enjoyable.

This video will explain basically everything you need for the trip, it’s a simple and very good content, he has another video here on the page but I couldn’t find so here is the new one from YouTube…

All these videos posted here are great. if you never tried Tuna fishing before you can rent the rods/reels before you make the decision to buy and a great tackle store will make up for a tuna lure, etc package for your area but the boat should have what you will need, jigging take practice. Being a newbie as well, as soon as I get on the boat I pay one deck hand$$(you still tip the boat/deckhands) to be my lookout/setups guy for the trip. But my one big thing is sea sickness medication, either from a doctor(best) to drug store, I use the non drowsy ginger dramamine the day before then I go up to the doctor's prescribed medicine 1-2 hours before going out, get a bunk/seat right away if they have them(rail position is not that important as a sleeping spot/bunks the better and bring a blanket/pillow) and get some sleep on the way out, you aint going to miss much in the dark heading out and take pictures a plenty( good old waterproof drugstore/wally store camera is good if you dont have anything else or dont want to get your phone wet or lost).

The beginners thread mentioned above is a great resource. Kinda long to look through but a great starting point. You have a bunch of options as far as rods and reels go. I'd recommend reaching out to the charter a few day before you go and try to find what they've been using on recent trips and go down the day before and hit a local tackle shop to pick some of those up. I just recently did my first 30hr trip and had a blast. I was worn out. Sleep when you can and count your first trip as a learning lesson.

Great to see all the replies here helping the newbies out. Not to hijack the thread but I will be on my first GOM offshore trip since moving this way from California. Great fishing but had to leave. I assume most of my gear will be good to go here since I was catching bluefin, yellowfin, and deep water rockfish out in the Pacific. I did pick up a Penn Battle 3 combo on a 7 foot rod since I did not have a spinning setup even though I am pretty confident casting with a conventional reel I know I don't want to be dealing with bird's nests in a hot bite. I will be on the Capt John with some co-workers on the Memorial Day weekend trip. Hope to meet some of you out there!
