The trip was pretty epic! We had 9 guys in my group and at least 8 landed at least one yellow. Mick, Mike and I carpooled from Dallas about 10 and met David at the 61st street pier and loaded up on pinfish and croaker then headed to the boat. Unfortunately by the time we hit the first spot only about 6 pinfish were still kicking.
I tried for grouper at each spot with no luck so settled for a bunch of smaller beeliner. There were a few grouper caught though.
When we hit the first rig, I hooked up on a popper but it ended up being a small blackfin that I reserved for chunk. Mike lande a nice yellow on a pink Halco then it was nothing for either of us after that. Tuna were being caught all around us using the same technique. The battered and repainted fusilier Halco seemed to be the hot lure with 2 yellows and a big black that I saw. I tried Halcos, poppers, frenzy’s and chunk and still no tuna. The second spot Mike crashed out so I tried the popper and had two blowups on it but no hookups. I started using Mikes rod and boom fish on. After a short fight I got it to the boat. At the third stop I hooked a small black and Mike caught 2 yellows almost back to back. A school of mahi came into the boat. Mike threw his lure in the middle and hooked a massive fish. He went off to fight it and I kept throwing the pink Halco and hooked a mahi. I went over to help Mike fight his fish and it was an absolute beast. I pumped and reeled, pumped and reeled and could barely budge it. Suddenly pop…. Broken braid.
mot was an awesome trip and as always Matt worked hard to put us on fish! Good luck to the guys sailing today!
