We finished out our week with two back to back trips with a Th-Fr open boat followed by a Sat-Sun private trip. The tuna bite wasn’t hot but it was steady enough to have plenty of opportunities and we killed 61 Yellowfin over the three nights we fished this week.

    10/22-23
Bottom fishing was a little tough, we really had to work for our Beeliners but we picked up a few Groupers and AJs to go along with them, with one of the AJs close if not over 100lbs.
We fished 2 rigs and a Drillship. The first rig had a decent bite of YFT but the Cudas really wore us out, once the yellows slowed down we left. The second rig produced nothing and we got on a few nice fish at the third with one going #125. The bite died at 4am and we bounced back to the second rig where just a few hours earlier was a dud. This time we had fish busting flyers and had multiple hookups as soon as we pulled up and eventually landed 6 more nice fish. It’s all in the timing some nights I guess. Yellows mostly came off Halcos and Flyer imitations.
    Trip totals...
22 YFT with the biggest going 125
    97 BFT
    204 Beeliners
5 AJ with one around 100
    4 Scamp
    4 AlmacoJack
    2 Ling
    1 RockHind AB49CD3E-ABD5-4566-9E9C-0A4866CA2555.jpeg 5BE467D2-88CF-4E5F-94BF-BD49D5247C60.jpeg 8F9A8D69-6BFB-4086-8601-85C815CCBBCC.jpeg 912324E4-7C6D-45CB-99AD-4834A785F35F.jpeg 9AE213DE-FBE8-4E73-BF58-0DA105BBDA1D.jpeg

    10/24-25
This trip was a private charter with only 25 passengers, most of which have fished with us previously and were a lot of fun to fish with.
The weather was rough, much worse than forecasted with NE winds sustained 20knots for the ride out and most of the night before it finally laid down after midnight.
We did not have much time for bottom fishing on the ride out and only made two quick stops. The first one was slow but produced some Scamps for us. The second stop had a solid bite of Beeliners and a few Jacks.
The first stop of the night was a drillship that had produced for us earlier in the week, we saw some fish jumping but after two drifts had nothing to show for it. At our second rig of the night we found a good chunk bite, we were hooking 2-4 BIG fish every drift but our luck was terrible. We had swivels break, hooks break, hooks pull, lines cross, fish swim into the rig, multiple fish break off in the wheel, and several more lines break under stress and got spooled twice. Most of the fish we hooked there were better than 100 lbs, the biggest we landed was 139(also our biggest for the season so far) but was by far not the biggest we hooked that night. We only landed 7 of the 30 we hooked there.
At our third rig we had a awesome bite on Halcos right when we pulled up, landing 7 fish, these were all 50-60 lbs and our hook to catch ratio went way up but we still lost several on that drift. Unfortunately the second drift there was a dud, I think we scattered them on the first drift and after that we ran to another close by drillship to kill some time and let the fish school back up. There we caught most of our BFT but didn’t see many yellows. We made it back to the third rig and landed a couple more YFT as the sun was coming up.
On the way home we made a quick stop and did some jigging on a deep water sea mount, the bite was slow but we caught some exotics there including a hoss Marble Grouper.

Awesome job again Capt Matt! My son and I had a great time on the 10/22 trip, and grateful that we were 2 of the 22 that got a YF. A couple things to remember here, if you put live bait in the well, you should bring a bucket to put them in at your assigned spot, and get them as soon as the boat starts slowing down. I went to grab a couple of perch, and the well was empty of bait? Also, the YF may be picky at times about the Halco colors, but the Cudas could care less, take lots of them!

I think we have put a dent in the Cudas there. Next trip there I’m going to tie up a bunch of steel leaders and use live piggies and eliminate as many more as possible. Gut and release!

Cuda taste great, Firm white meat with no fishy taste at all, I’d be happy bringing them home any day.

Yes, when you can’t get any Blackfin to chunk Cuda will work.

That may be true but the smell with the skin on is bad enough to stink up the whole fish box. Any Barracuda over 3 feet has a high mercury level and once they get that big the risk for Cig goes way up. We keep very few, only when the customer wants them which is rare.

They definitely stink, but I've eaten a number of them in the 10 to 15 lb range and they are very tasty. That said I'd only box one if things were slow.

11/5-11/6 was an outstanding trip for us.

This trip is in the top 3 nights that I have ever seen.
Bottom fishing on the way out was not good but fortunately the tuna fishing more than made up for it.
We got to the rig about an hour after sunset and it was ON immediately, with 20+ YFT landed on the first drift. The next few drifts were almost as good and then it slowed down for about an hour until the moon rose and after that it was steady for the rest of the night. Halcos, Yummees, and Frenzy’s were the key baits with a few coming off poppers. The majority of our fish were in the 60-70 lb range with maybe half a dozen pushing 100.
    Trip totals....
    92 YFT
    200 BFT
    137 Beeliners

It was the most we have caught in a night in a 30 hr. We had a night on a 56 where we caught 125.

    We had another good trip.
We didn’t have much time to bottom fish on the ride out with the time change and the long run but it was not very good anyway. We caught some Beeliners and that’s about it. Fortunately the night fishing made up for it.
We got to the rig about 7:30 and were welcomed to a hot bite right off the bat with 25 YFT landed within the first two drifts. It slowed down some after that but we still consistently picked up 2-3 yellows per drift for the rest of the night. The majority of our fish came off Halcos.
    Totals...
    73 YFT
    182 BFT
    79 Beeliners
    6 Lesser AmberJack
    1 Scamp
