Took a husband, wife, daughter and 11 year old son out last Sunday. Didn't leave the dock until 10:45. Start fishing at 12:30 and get a sailfish hooked up for the 11year old. We release it and start trolling again. Hook up with an estimated 450 blue that the wife fought for an hour. Passes the rod to her husband who fought the fish for another hour and we get it up close to the boat when he lets go of the rod. Penn 50 two speed. Poor fish going to drag that thing around until the hook pulls or rusts out.

And some people think the life of a charter boat captain is glorious......another 1000 bucks gone.I guess thats the cost of doing business, did he at least tip you well?

HMMMMM.......maybe thats why charter captains use light drag sometimes.

We set our drags at 11 pounds at strike. 60 lb mono. Its like you say most people can't even handle 11 lbs. The drag was pushed up to full when he let go. Worst part was how close the fish was to release. I could see the double line about five feet below the water.

Not a penny for the rod and reel or any tip. He says he wants to come back but I'm going to tell John to fish this cheap SOB
??? let go of the rod--am I missing something. Why? Then not to offer any compensation even just a token amount, then stiff the crew on the tip.

A charter operator is definitely a tough job!

I have a story like that, but with a Stella 20000 and the fish had yet to be hooked.

We were sharking about 50 miles south of RI with a full spread of 4 rods in holders, 2 in "outrodder" holders that hold the rods parallel to the water. there were safety lines on 3, but the mate had just been repositioning the bait on the last rod, so the drag was slightly tighter than normal.

all of a sudden we get a strike on one of the other rods, it seemed like a big fish, and seconds later, the un-hooked rod gets hit too. It flies out of the holder and we all get to watch its bubble trail as it streaks away.

We were almost able to save it as we use balloons for floats, and the shark didn't dive, so we slacked off on the other fish and chased after the lost rod, following the yellow balloon as it streaks away. But, RIGHT as we get within gaff range of the line, the shark dives and the balloon pops.

There's 1000 down the drain.

However, the shark stayed hooked to the other rod, and turned out to be about a 14' Blue Shark estimated at 500lbs!! This was a fish that would have broken the RI state record by 70lbs!!

WTF???? What a jerk. That's completely ridiculous on both accounts. The moron should've at least ponied up some money for the rod/reel. The tip thing is just being a d*ck - ugh. What he might not have understood is that to get 2 billfish on one trip is really awesome! I'd be very happy with a trip like that, especially with a big blue marlin.

I'm curious, at the outset of such a trip or sometime before allowing the customer to use the tackle, do you do a little briefing which includes "don't let go; pass the rod to a crewmember and wait until he confirms he has it?"

I take it from your post that there was no harness or safety line and there were no other relevant circumstances, such as a slip or trip on the deck, missed handoff signal, momentary client blackout/stroke (happens). How does a guy just drop a rod+reel (and w/a fish on, he likely also would have had a hand on the reel)?

Can you now post a notice re cost of lost gear and require a deposit--or does that kill biz? I guess only a "no jerks" policy takes care of the tip thing.

i wouldnt ride that guy too hard, he proly feels lke a D.A. for doing it, you dont have any u break u buy it policies? or rather u drop it in the water whilst hooked to a 400# blue u buy it policy? i kno most headboats round here do that, in fact i think fishermans wharf charges 700 bucks for one of their winches if dropped over.
