Hello All,
I have a small delema, and was hpoeing that someone could help me out. I just picked up a Penn 80 VSW. I am trying to figure out what line combo I am going to put together. I was looking at putting Power Pro 150lb test braid. I am also considering puting a top-shot on, but don't know what size I should go with or legnth. Or I was considering just putting on a 25' wind-on leader. Any help on sizes, legnth etc. will greatly be appriciated. I am really new to the really big game fishing. I would like my rigg to be capable of getting in a 800 to 1200lb Marlin.

Thanks in advance,

Ray

If you plan on using it to troll for billfish then you will need a long topshot.

It really depends on what type of fishing you plan on doing, but with 150# braid you could go with 100, or 130# mono topshot.
Welcome aboard SSgtkc10cc.

Pack it with 1000 yards of 200lb spectra (either JB, PP, others) and top-shot of your choice from 100-300lb. With 200lb spectra, you will have broader option to fish light or to fish really heavy line. JMO

I spooled my 70VS with 200 spectra and short top shot (50-100ft) of 100 to 200lb Momoi Diamond top-shot.
i am not a marlin guru, but i was under the impression that most marlin guys fish straight mono due to the strech factor. That being said you can put about 500 yards of 130# JB and fill the rest with momoi.

Again i am no expert, i am sure some of the marlin guys can help.
Thank you guys for your time and inputs. I will use them for my final decision.

Thanks again,
Ray
I just wanted to thanl you guys again. My father and I went out this weekend and caught a 400+ marlin. We got it in an hour and ten minutes. We spooled up 200 spectra and a long 300lb leader. It was a blast.

Thanks Again,

Ray
congrats on the Marlin!! did you get any pics?? We would love to see them..
Jery Brown is the best, its soft and packs on the reel tight and it isnt anywhere as sharp as regular braid. This will also allow you to splice the lines togther eliminating a large knot. I would spool it with JB 130+ spliced into a long (200-300 yards) mono leader. When I spooled my alutecnos 50w for tuna I got close to 900 yeards of JB 130 and another 200 of mono

just my 2 cents
Bret,

We did get pictures, but my father and I forgot the camera.(Go Figure.) There were some other folks on the boat that got plenty of pictures. We are working on getting those. I will post some of them when I get them.

what a shame to me thats pointless killing that marlin but maybe im wrong maybe it died and you had no choice but to keep it but i myself am a firm believer in catch and realese expecially bill fish...:(
Maybe they are going to EAT the GD fish. Nice going. Perfect day , father and son and big fish.

Point well taken... But as a first time poster on this site, maybe its not the best way to make an apperance. I was mearly giving my opinion, if you have a problem with that then im sorry.I happen to recall something about freedome of speech ? Maybe you've heard of it. Just my "GD" 2 cents.
Welcome to the site:cool:
Be nice KKM, this site is a friendly site.

Fisherman kill Marlin everyday in other part of the world and in this country as well. Majority of fish caught and kill in other part of the world are consume and not wasted.
Uh oh, someone just made TJ bust out his authoritor stick, lol! :D
Maybe they are going to EAT the GD fish.

it was revived and released there at the dock after the photos were taken..........

200lb Jerry Brown Hollow with a 130lb Sufix Superior top shot. This is not the only way to go, but a time tested and proven method.
