Last year on an offshore trip i saw for the first time first hand how to jig for squid thesse people had a single prawn style squid jig on a small fresh water rod reel combo now they were vthrowing the jig out and twitching it all the way back to the boat rarely letting it get lower than say 5 feet so naturally i thought that was how its done. yet i ordered my jigs and notided on the back it says tie on a sinker and every like foot or so tie a jig to the main line which is better in your opinion or does it depend on location and condition or trial and error

There are 2 kind of squid jigs.
Weighted shrimp like squid jig (first picture), this style of jig doesn't need extra weight. It works great when the squid is on the surface.

Non weighted squid jig, weight is needed for this style of jig, it works great if the squid is down deep.

I was the first guy who started to charter a boat exclusively for squid fishing in the US about 20 years ago. Now you have to make a reservation for a boat at least 6 month in advance during the squid run.
How much can you catch a day ? If you know how to jig, you probably catch 100 - 200 lbs squid by using squid jigs. That is a lot of squid as 2 -3 squid makes a pound. But not a single squid is wasted as we eat them and save them for bait.

We caught some pretty decent ones in CR a few years back on an overnighter. I think 25lbs was the largest.. You put a light on your squid jig (to make it glow)and drop it down about 1000 ft and slow jig it up.. til it gets heavy , then finesse it the rest of the way and swing it in the boat... you then pick it up and squirt your closest fishing buddy..

The best way to eat squid is to slice them like noodle when just caught and eat with soy source/washibi or Korean hot source.

They freeze very well.

oo i could give 2 craps about eating them at this point all though this italian boy is a big calamari fan but im using them as bait we had so much squid on the surface cruisin it looked like a blanket, in turn bringing in mahi like ive never seen im talkin 2 schools circling the boat all night like 40 fish total 1 slob of a maihi did show up had 2 be atleast 30 pounds but got spooked o well thanks for the help kil and everyone leaving monday night will be sure to post a report when i get back thursday night.

If squid are on the surface, cast Yozuri squid jig without a sinker as far as you can using spinning rod and retrieve slowly with some jerk action.

If you see your bait has marks bitten by squid, lower your Yozuri squid jigs to the same depth as your bait was using hi - lo rig with a sinker.
You can use light sticks, but Yozuri glow jigs are good enough.

American squid jigs don't work well. Try to use Yozuri type squid jigs.

yea i figured that out last year i have both styles the stripes y zuri type and the american type i only had the american type last year and i couldnt catch a damn thing with it thats why i bought the yozuri style jigs i saw people throwin thos and they were catchin em faster tna you could count thanks for the help kil, btw you guys can call me tony if you'd like
