Well...I found a little internet cafe right by the dock. I will be able to provide a daily report on how we do here in Puerto Vallarta. We leave in about 15 minutes.....later!

Mr. Bill,

No, we did not take any gear with us on this trip. The Veterans formerly known as old pharts do plan on taking gear next year though....they are convinced that it might improve their chances by adding jigging and topwaters to the fishing plan.

I "lost" my cell phone on this trip....I think it disappeared from my bags somewhere between Mexican Customs and my house...so I don't know if I'll pack my expensive fishing reels next year.
Did you see any topwater action during your stay ?
I always bring my gears when I visit PV, but I put all my reels in carry-on bag.
NICE FREAKIN TUNA HAMBURGLAR!!!! WOW!
Hamburglar???? LOL!!!

If I went, I would have to take some popping and jigging gear, it's only prudent!!

Tom
We did not see any topwater popper fishing, but we had a tuna > 150 lbs. jump out of the water about 20 yards from the boat! If I had my topwater rig....I would have been able to hit that tuna on the head.
G
there were yellowfin tuna caught on what they called poppers but were actually jigs. next year we are going to bring spinning gear, poppers and jigs and have asked to be allowed to fish our way at least 2 of the 3 days offshore. i know i can catch bait easier with my jigging gear and i would like to try some 300 lb tuna on spinning gear. we had a great time in puerto vallarta even with all the rainfall.
I plan to go to PV mainly for jigging and popping in late Sept or Oct.
I am thinking about fishing on a panga as we have to chase tuna on surface as fast as we can.

Are the panga's easy to charter? I've never chartered a panga in PV. I guess what I'm trying to say is if I get a wild hair and have some time in the next month, could I just hop on a plane and find a panga without any problems?

A few panga in PV is not the usual panga you see in other part of mexico. Some of them are more like a center console. I have a few panga operations in mind as I gathered some information when I was there.
After a little research, I think a Super Panga out of Punta Mita is the best bet. Punta Mita is 35 miles NW of PV. It's a fishing village like PV was 40 years ago.

El Blanco or Cleophus Bank is only a 24 mile run. Roca Corbeteno or barnacle island is only a 16 mile run. The super pangas are cheap. 450 bucks for a 10 hour day. They run twin 4 stroke Honda's on the 26 foot super pangas.

Check out this picture of the three YF's that were caught off a super panga. The big one was 317#s on a certified scale!!!!!!

Mr. Bill....

If you go with a couple of other people....you can get the Pacifico or something like it for only $350 per day, ($1050/3 per day). The Pangas are probably fine to fish off of....but with the rollers that they have it would probably be a lot more comfortable in a 33 ft Bertram.

It depends how you fish. For normal fishing, Manny of the Pacifico, Osuna of the Marla and Josh of the Prime Time are the elite group. But I prefer center console style boats for popping as you have to chase fast moving tuna on tops and it is easier to cast.
But the real issue is not to find a right boat, but to find a right captain who is willing to do what I want. :)
Good point Kil....

I'm not sure that topwater poppers would be that successful as a primary fishing style but it would be nice to have just for the right situation. I saw a 150-200 lb. yellowfin jump out of the water sideways with his beautiful blue thick back to us about 20 yards from the boat. A topwater might have nailed that fish!

There is a very good possibility that jigging may be more successful. El Banco is a series of three volcanic structures under water that are around 500 ft, 600ft and 800ft in depth. Jigging these areas might be VERY productive. I'm anxious to see what happens next year when we have our jigging gear on board.
I jigged pretty hard on my PV trips, but I didn't get anytuna except skipjack.
When I fished lower banks off Baja on the Qualifer 105, I finally figured out that cow hit jigs only when it get dark like dracula. :)
But you can not mix slow trolling and jigging together. I could jig only while other guys fought fish. :(
That is why I am determined to fish mostly jig and poppers this time.
Are you planning on jigging with the Accurate 665 2-speed? I think that reel could bring in a 200-300 cow. You might need new drags afterwards...but I bet it would do the job.

Not to be critical, the Pacifico is a Blackfin not a Bertram. I'm not sure if Blackfin's are still being produced. Cabo has taken a huge market share of the production sportfisherman's. I've been on about 10 different Cabo's over the years. If you haven't been on a Cabo, I highly recommend it. Very nice and finished out in every single nook and cranny. We were on a 48 flybridge Cabo in PV over Labor Day for four days and three nights. Very nice boat. Thank God it holds 1000 gallons of fuel. It took 912 gallons when we refueled. There was four of us and we each gave the Capt. a grand. I thought it was rather cheap but we also didn't plan on going all the way to Mazatlan when we stepped on the boat. I think it was about a 300 mile trip without all the zig zagging.

I don't mind the super pangas. Last year I was in Zihuatanejo and used a super panga to catch Roosterfish. Throwing poppers in the surf from the water is very productive. Most Rooster's average about 25 pounds and can go up to 85 pounds. You cast your popper from outside the sand bar into the breakers. Most hits happen after the breaker has leveled out and the white water is clearing. It's fun. I recommend a roosterfishing trip to everyone before you die. :D

It's easy to find a super panga in most Mexican coastal towns. The Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo area is full of them. Most are in "Z." The locals just call it "Z." I've found it's best to show up at the docks around 3PM and see who has the most fish. Strike a deal and show up the next morning. Always tell the guy that your not the average tourist. Tell him you are a serious fisherman and you will recommend him to all your friends.

I learned something from Gunsmoke years ago. He tells them he is a sports writer for a major sport fishing magazine. He used to have to fake business cards when he went to foreign ports. Not only would the Capt. work his butt off, he gave a great deal. Most of the time he only paid for the fuel and tip the deckhand. Sometimes it was FREE!!!!:)

Are you planning on jigging with the Accurate 665 2-speed? .

This is off topic but: I just got back from a machine shop. I'm having a special knob made for the Accurate 665W 2-speed. It is going to fit my hand just perfect. It's going to cost me about half the price of the reel, but I think I will like it. I'm debating if I should get six made. He will lower the price by 30% if I buy six.

MrBill, I'd be interested in one for my 665 if he wants to make another one...
You might get enough guys for a big enough order to cut the price a bit more..
Let me know..

The reel has line capacity and enough max drag for cow, but I don't know the reel can sustain the pressure of big cow for long period of time. You got to try it to know. :)
