Hey guys..long time no hear...Hey, a friend of mine bought me this, apparently a vintage reel. I'm trying to understand the logic of this reel, take note of the reel seat. Yep, this will be a conversation piece at my residence...LOL!!

Are there any markings on the reel itself?

The BOX does not match the reel.
It is not a 100-a, see picture below.

You have an early model "spinning reel"

    Reel is from 1953.
    Its from their Sidewinder series,
which they started producing in the 40's.

    Line coming out the side,
supposedly prevented the reel from backlashing/birdsnest.
It is a quality reel for its time.

    Try freshwater fishing with it,
good for 8 to 10 lb line.

    It's from 1953.
    From their "side winder" series.

Designed that way because it was supposed to prevent backlashes.

Reel is quality made, all metal.
Good for 8 to 10 pound test.
Spool it up and try it on a lake,
    retro crappie fishing.

Is that the same Johnson as the outboard motors?
