I've never been tuna fishing, but is there any reason this set up is no good? Intent is to use a split ring to connect the hooked ring to the jig. I'd like to add another set of assist hooks on the tail end of jig, but those would be set up on a solid ring and split ring. Lengths are short enough to not get top and bottom hooks fouled on each other.

I'm trying to learn and play around with stuff. I got into assist hooks, because I bought some 350g Shimano jigs that do not come with hooks. Some assist hooks at the store and online look pretty puny.

I'm scared of weak hooks after my dad had a vmc circle hook straighten on him on a 12 hour snapper trip (I think it was a 6/0 tournament circle and 12 or 15# of drag).

These are 5x mustad hoodlum hooks.

thanks 👍

Edit: just thought it was nice the hook failed and not one of my knots or splices.

Looks good but i would definetely use Single hooks with a longer shank.

I primarily do top water tuna but here is a jigging setup i use for tuna.
I now tie my assist hooks to a solid ring then to a split ring instead of straight onto the jig.
The longer assist cord is zylon to prevent break off when a tuna swallows the jig

It’s a waste of swivels if you ask me

Use a solid ring to make the assist hooks

hook -> solid ring -> split ring -> jig + swivel -> leader.

moving the swivel to the top will give you the same result and you will only need 1

You’re on the right track. Main thing to remember is not to have a split ring anywhere in between your leader and your hook. I’m just not fond of having another hook on the bottom for safety reason.

Hey man, the new setup looks wayyyyy better. You wont have hook interference with single hooks which will lead to a higher hookup ratio IMO. Plus, i would rather have a 6/0 single hook vs. 2 4/0's.
The longer assist cord will benefit by keeping the jig/leader out of the tuna's mouth. Good luck. and set the hook strong!!! they have tough mouths.

then check out the Jig Star Swivel and Grommet system -

Swivel is 335lb stainless steel ball bearing. Not so oblivoius in the pix is a smaller ring to loop on the assist hook which gives separation from the leader as well as freedom of movement. Changing hooks is easy, changing jigs is easy. As Illy says above, incoporating the swivel in the assist hook is a waste of expensive swivels. Here, just lie leader to the grommet, loop on assist hook and splitring on the jig. Easy!

At what drag setting do you really need to think about removing a split ring from being between the leader and hook? I’m using owner ultra size #8-10 splits. I use 65lb braid and 60-80lb leader for jigging for YFTs and run 15-19lb of drag on a fathom 40nld2.

Those jigstars look cool but im wondering if I’d benefit from them at my drag setting. How much will the knot breaking strength increase when tying to the grommet vs a Palamor knot to the swivel?

This is what I had in mind, but I might have to remove the bottom hook if it is deckhand unfriendly View attachment 126583
I'm going to get slapped in the back of the head for this maybe. But deckhands are supposed to be experienced with hooks and fish. Rig your jigs as you want, you're there to put every opportunity at hooking and bringing that fish over the rail, deckhands are paid to deal with hooks, no matter how many.

Believe the Ultras are a heavier stronger wire, than the Hyper wire.
I'll be rigging with single stingers everywhere. Others made a reasonable point double assist on the same ring could get tangled.

I call your two on one jig, and raise you two on one hook

LOL, I hear ya and roll as you may, although believe you're over thinking it, dancing stringers are common.
Where's our Benny when you need him, wish he would chime in......
