Have used a lot of fireline 2# > 20# over a lot of years and love it.
tried 17 & 25# XDS a couple of years back with breakage at knots, that work fine with normal fireline, so a significant problem compared to normal fireline .
So don't compare your experience with normal fireline to any expectations with the XDS .
Let's just say I have some unused XDS in the cupboard that will probably only ever see use as backing on lighter rated line...........if I am desperate.
most likely those spools will become heirlooms.
well used furry normal fireline has better knot strength !!!!!..........and plenty of viability as backing where the furry stuff does not affect casting distance with lighter lures.

The thing to remember is that these fireline products are just strands of PE twisted together and then the coating glues it all together.
because the PE strands are pretty straight in the line it has a significantly higher breaking strain as a straight line than the same number of strands in braid which has kinks/bends in the braiding. The straight fibres in fireline & XDS lose significant breaking strain in the knot as they kink/bend in the forming of the knot.
Hence the reason why the actual breaking stain of fireline is a lot higher than what it says on the box.............the figure on the box equates to the minimum breaking strain after an average decent knot.
this is a completely different rating system than for mono or PE braid.

The thing with PE braid is that its already kinked/bent in the braiding process , line BS is rated after braiding, and does not lose much strength in the additional kinks/bends in the knot form.............so its knot strength is closer to its actual line strength compared to fireline products

    Hope that helps.
