Well, I got very depressed watching the 'Horns get their butts kicked the day after Thanksgiving (please understand it was not so much that my team lost as it was that I knew it would make Gunsmoke happy
). I have heard that fat women, when their husbands leave them, take solace in eating huge amounts of chocolate, pies, cakes--that sort of thing. So I got to thinking--I have been wanting an ATD-12 for a long time, looking for any excuse to buy one, and maybe it would make me feel better in the process. Also, I have been using the ATD 50W for both chunking/live bait on the surface AND for deep dropping. This means I have to re-rig on the way in and on the way out. Now of course this is not all that much trouble, but I figured "What would Rick do?" Well obviously he would have three reels on board for each purpose. Like I say, I was looking for any excuse.
I had made the right call, buying an ATD 50 wide's from TJ, (probably one of Rick's old cast-offs that he had used a few times and tired of) but I made the mistake of NOT picking up an ATD 12 he was selling back when I had the chance. I have been kicking myself ever since.
So anyway, I gutted it up and ordered one spooled to the gills with Jerry Brown 100 pound hollow. And while I was at it, I picked up a 665W 2-speed with 80 pound JB. This latter is my third one--having broken the previous two before they ever got out of my garage. This time, I won't set the drag higher than 25 pounds. Kil and others advised me to buy the regular width for jigging, but I can't seem to get past being a whore for line capacity. I think when I go out for nearshore bottom fishing, this would be my reel and I would rather have the extra line in the rare event something big gets on.
In terms of clearest and best use of the two ATD, s my thinking is that I would set the 50 up for deep fishing for AJ s and grouper and the 12 for chunking, since it is so much lighter and would seem easier on the old body once a fish is on. I would be interested if anyone disagrees with that division of labor for the two reels.
So now the Longhorns can go to hell for another year. Either we will live up to our potential next year or, who knows, maybe I'll pick up an ATD 80.
