Went out to the lease to hunt the weekend and up until the front came in. It still doesn't appear to me that the rut is going on in my portion of Young County - or if it is, it is only pre-rut. Even my does are mostly nocturnal now. My biggest 8ptr and the 10 haven't been on the cameras since day before the season started (the 8) and in a week now (for the 10).

Saturday morning and evening I watch a spike - but that is all I see. Didn't see anything Sunday. This morning it's a bit foggy. Early (7:30) I see a doe walk out and move accross some mesquite breaks heading for an oak thicket. I have a quick shot before it reaches the oaks. I figure I'll put some meat in the freezer and get the stink off so that I can wait around for a big one - it's been 6 years since I hunted prior to this season. Well the deer is quartering away from me at about 60 yards moving through the broom weed that obsucres most of it except for head and neck. I take the neck shot and it drops in its tracks.

Go over to it - and it's the friggin spike! Crap, Crap...did I say CRAP?

If that isn't bad enough as I'm leaving the lease (about 8:30 now) I see a deer lying in the bar ditch not 100' from my gate. I go over and check it out - it's one of the bucks that I've had on my cameras (1st post next thread), a decent 8ptr with a hooked right brow tine...dangit it....crap again....

It was pretty fresh when I first saw it (around 8:30am) the photo is from about 11:30 after I had dropped the spike off at the processor and checked out of my hotel.

Yep, doing some of that with the spike. I hear the processor I used (Graham) makes real good breakfast sausage so am doing some of that with him (they do 50/50 venison and pork).

We've had some of the backstrap and chilli allready from Kyle's deer so I know they do a pretty good job.
