May is the start of our green season in Costa Rica, which runs through November, and marks the start of the second fishing season here. While most people refer to December through April as "the peak fishing season in Costa Rica", that's not the full story as that only refers to the months with the best sailfish numbers. We catch sails and marlin 12 months a year in Costa Rica, but the fishing is so good from May through November we call it our peak 'meat season' or 'variety season'. These are the months when we typically enjoy the best tuna, dorado, and wahoo bite offshore as well as great bottom fishing for snappers, grouper, and amberjacks.

The 2018 season has been fantastic for tuna and dorado anyway, most captains are in agreement it's been the best dorado year in a decade and for the second year in a row the tuna bite has been wide open. We expected that to continue last month as we kicked off 'meat season', but what was most surprising was the uptick in sailfish numbers at the start of the month. The first two weeks of May featured 10+ sailfish a day for many boats as well as several more blue marlin, especially up in the Guanacaste as the bite spreads out and moves north this time of year. Towards the end of the month the sailfish bite came back down to Earth with 1-3 releases being the norm, but the tuna bite remained strong and the dorado bite went nuts with some boats catching upwards of 20-30 in a day.

The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica finally saw stable and consistent seas conditions as the North American winter FINALLY went away. I fished the first weekend of the month and jumped 12 tarpon, releasing 3. Throughout the rest of the month the seas were calm and anglers did battle with tarpon just about every day they were able to get out of the river mouth and into the ocean.

Don't forget that June through September are the best months for our overnight trips out to the FADs, or seamounts, so if you are interested in the best marlin fishing in the world just let us know!

Below are the highlights for the top boats from Quepos to Los Suenos up to Guancaste.
