The offshore fishing last month in Costa Rica continued to be steady, but not quite prolific like years past. The sailfish bite has been very stop and go with some days featuring double digit bites and other featuring just one or two fish all day (including a few skunks!). This peak season has been saved by the welcome presence of big dorado and yellow-fin tuna, which for the second year in a row has been pretty phenomenal. The increase in tuna numbers can be directly attributed to stricter commercial fishing laws here (purse seiner licences granted to foreign vessels dropped from 43 in 2016 to 13 in 2018).

While the sailfish numbers aren't setting the world on fire, 2018 continues to be one of the best marlin years in the past decade. Catching marlin in March is definitely quite common, but seeing so many and on a near daily basis, including a few monster blacks, is certainly a welcome surprise.
