Will be going to Catalina Island here in October and would like to get some tuna. Any tips on how to catch them? Rod/Reel/Line/Leaders/Lures. Will be jigging and popping. Will also be using spinning gear.

I have never tuna fished at Catalina Island, not saying they aren't there, but I do know they are/were on the west side of San Clemente Island which is south of Catalina.

However to answer your question I'll tell you what we did the last week of August.

20/30 pound test kits with a #2 hook for live bait.

Surface Irons in Mint, Blue White, Bird Shit, and White worked for the Yellowtail.

YoYo's in the same colors.

Knife jigs were the hot lure last trip but Flat Falls work too.

I'd also take a heavier kit as well, something in the 50-60 pound class.

Are you going on a private or charter boat?

Good luck keeping the Bonita off if they are in the area.

Fun fish to catch on light tackle till you see what you got.

Good Luck!

Does normal speed vertical jigs work for them? Similar jigging style in the east coast?
