The factory hooks on those are pretty tough. I was casting a 160g on my last trip and ended up hooking a 200lb+ dusky shark. Had a gosa 14k with the drag locked down and the hooks and assist cord held.I got a couple Shimano flat fall jigs for casting for yellow fin. Are the factory hooks okay or do they need changed out?
I remember that shark!!!!!! That was a for sure test of your equipment!!!!!The factory hooks on those are pretty tough. I was casting a 160g on my last trip and ended up hooking a 200lb+ dusky shark. Had a gosa 14k with the drag locked down and the hooks and assist cord held.
Heard they did pretty good, 20 something yellowfin, so I'm told. Was anybody on the CJ for the Monday Tuesday trip? Or does anyone know how they did?
Yeah haha I ended up taking that reel in for service, started feeling real geary and the drag washers were burned up. I was most surprised my FG held thoughI remember that shark!!!!!! That was a for sure test of your equipment!!!!!
I was on the NB and saw CJ at the bottom fishing spots, rig and drill ship. Got some good pics of them at night when we were drifting close to each other. We were unloaded and heading home before they got back to port so I didn't see what they had hanging.Heard they did pretty good, 20 something yellowfin, so I'm told.
Who all is on the Memorial Day trip next weekend?
My partner in crime is truly excited, it will be her first time ever offshore. She will be jigging at our bottom fishing stops.....
Plus give it a go casting for Yellowfin, i think she will do just fine.
I was right there when you and the deck hands fought that. Javair ended up putting his size to work bringing it to the surface after what seemed to be an hour of hard fighting. Hopefully your gear was covered under warranty.Yeah haha I ended up taking that reel in for service, started feeling real geary and the drag washers were burned up. Not only will it be her first time offshore, it will be her first time at the ocean. She has never even walked the beach or wade in the water.I was on the NB and saw CJ at the bottom fishing spots, rig and drill ship. We're on that memorial day trip. Hoping for an epic trip that weekend since it will be the last for a few months while everyone goes nuts for red snapper season. I think we have a good game plan going in to give ourselves the best chance to get lots of tuna using several techniques simultaneously. Looking forward to seeing your other half tear it up and out fish everyone like first timers tend to do.
get a patch and some Bonine! Keep her well and she will have a blast! Not only will it be her first time offshore, it will be her first time at the ocean. She has never even walked the beach or wade in the water.
So there's not much middle ground that I see, this is only going to go one way, either good or bad.
She does have a natural ability to catch fish here at home as well as me or if not better. Absolutely loves it....
Let's go fishing, there will be several of us on this trip. It's going to be nice to get out and the forecast is looking good.@Palomarknot I will be on the CJ next weekend with a few coworkers. Looking forward to sharing the rail with you as this will be my first GOM trip though I've fished west coast for pelagics the last few years. Will be interesting to see what works out here compared to west coast.
