Hey guys I caught this big tuna last year in north Peru. Not sure if it is a bigeye or a yellowfin? What do you think?

White Tuna, (escolar)

;)
Thanks guys! What got me confused is that dorsal and anal fins were not as long as I saw in others YFT of that size. This one was 183lbs. But the rest looks more as a YFT than Bigeye... Even at the IGFA some people said it was a bigeye!
Definitely a YFT. The notch in the fork of the tail gives it away. Bigeye don’t have that.

What charter operation did you use down there ?

Totally agree. That's the easiest way to differentiate YFT and Bigeye.

I North Peru you have a place callled Mancora Bank which is 25 miles from the coast. there is a big change in depth and the area is very fishy. It is the best place in the world for catching wahoo. All of them range from 40lbs to 140lbs. Last year my biggest was 120lbs. You can also find nice tuna, mahi and stripped and black Marlin(less frequent). The point is that there is not a charter operation there. Only 2 boats that can be rented and their equipment is ok. The best is to bring your stuff.

late entry- just came across this thread...
there are charters there, from Tumbes down to Negritos (I've not ventured further).
Punta Sal, then Zorritos, in order of ease of acquiring Charters. These ain't no Costa Rica SF charters though- most of my trips have been on Pangas, one on a 27 BW Outrage.
Truly a throwback place...highly recommend anyone with the means to go- getting there is a PIA, but worth it. Relatively cheap too- as far as accommodations, food, etc go.
For me, it was like what PCH (the trail) must have looked like 150 yrs ago; endless blue ocean to the west and hardly anything to the east.

I'd like to go. I never hear of folks going to Peru to fish. And your right, it must be a throw back to an earlier time. The harder it is to do something, the less people do it. I'm imagine that the fishing is top notch.
