I'm a spinning guy, conventional is all new to me. Ideally I would like a reel that I can strap into a harness. I recently got a spiral wrapped Black Hole 450g from a 360 member, now I need to figure out which reel to match it with. It will be used for Cape Cod bluefin, mostly jigging RonZ (slow jigging) and the occasional butterfly jig. Fish can be 50 inches or 100 inches. For spinning reels we look for something that can hold 400+ yards of 80lb and 30+ lbs of drag, so I'm assuming that's the standard for conventional as well. Recommendations? From what I've been reading Talica 25 seems like a good choice, then another thread will contradict that saying talicas are terrible jigging reels. Any advice is appreciated!
Maxel Ocean Max 12 or 16. Goose Hummock had some in stock last time I was up there. Drop by and handle it for yourself. They were designed for jigging and about half the price of the Alutecnos Gorilla 20.
If you get it I’ve got an adapter for harness you can have. J and H used to sell them for like $20. Fits on the reel seat clamp.
I have a penn international VISX 16 strapped to my BH 450g spiral wrapped rod. Will hold 765yrds of 80lb braid and 45lbs max drag. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-int16visxs-international-visx-trolling-reel.html
Yes, honestly speed jigging wears me out. I'll slow jig a RonZ and that's about it. I landed a 80" on spinning, at least I can strap in this time!
I just don't like reeling my bait/jig up from the depths with a single speed haha looks like a sweet reel tho!
If you ever need an extra for a trip let me know! I live over in NY but head out and try and do a few trips a year. I get out on uncles boat and we head to stellwagen and around ptown area, and we do 1 or 2 helen H charter trips each year.
If Let me know next time you're in the area. I only have a 20 foot center console (for now) but I go for tuna every chance I get!
I can run out any weekend you want to go! We come out end of may for a week usually to yarmouth. Go out of barnstable harbor for stripers. Then in fall we will do a week for BFT on uncles boat then the Helen H canyon trips.
