BFT Rod Sharing

4537 Views 27 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Snaphappy
I've seen several videos and read reports of guys sharing the rod while fishing for BFT on the East Coast and was wondering if this is common practice? I've never caught a BFT yet, but I know these beasts put up a back breaking, labor intensive fight. To me though, I cannot claim that I caught a fish unless I hooked and I landed it with out assistance. That's just me though. Thanks!

Garriga, excuse me for asking , but what's your point .
I was under the impression the topic was about BFT on jig or poppers, what's trolling got to do with it , confused .
If you accept the fact each faught the fish then why not accept the fact that each caught the fish? If the first failed then the second wouldn't have gotten a chance to fight or ultimately land it. The last to hold the stick didn't alone win the relay race.

The point about trolling is that rarely is any fish captured without external help. Rarely can one say they mastered any fish from hook to table or release. Captain probably found the fish and chased it down or maneuver the fish to better one's odds of landing said fish. Mate probably leader the fish.

This is not a solo sport. Takes team effort to defeat these fish. Just speak with Paul and ask how much the Captain and mate contribute to those quick captures of Sami we see. Therefore, why would one feel less triumph if they handed off and weren't the one who ultimately landed the fish. Not only were the fisherman involved but so were the captain and crew. I just don't feel anyone can say they've done it all even if they went from hook to deck without a handoff. Just my opinion on the question asked, that's all.

landing a bog fish is a team work.
probably the captain is the one with the most important role maneuvering the boat and keeping the line tight and in angle, the mate gives directions to both angler and cap. a bad mate at gaff can ruin a long battle. and the angler just puts the strength.

working as a team have its rewards at the end,,,,,,

now who landed the fish??????? it depends on how selfish you are.
This is the reason I mostly ignore the IGFA. How exactly does one take credit for baiting a Blue Marlin next to the boat and a mate gaffing it before it realizes its tethered to 4# test. Doesn't seem like much angling skill involved.

Most records probably belong to the captain/guide than the one following their advise. Perhaps why some Captains boast about how many world records they've been part of since they are the one who deserve that recognition. Not dismissing angler skills but often good gear and good advise help greatly.

Experience at its best.
High end is a great help.
Physical condition is a plus....

BUT,,,a good friend willing to help is....Priceless

Even some of the most expereinced anglers pass a rod or two.
Its a throphy fish , better pass your rod when you're wore out than losing a fish of a life time. Enjoy it.

It depends on the fish, depth, tackle you are using, how fit you are....etc
When we fish for mediterranean BFT, we pass the rod in the first fish or two , giving priority to newer members to experience how is it to fight a BFT
If we are lucky, and more fish is hooked, we then start to push our limits.
If you wanna do it alone, make sure that the tackle you use is not too much for your body, I doubled the time I can fight by going from pe10 to pe8 :)

As for who caught the fish, we always call it team work (and it really is), but the fish is named for the one who hooks it, after all the first run is 60% of the fun

You make a great point about line. A lot of people see someone do it and copy the rod/reel/line/lure/etc.. Then when they get buttoned up realize they can't handle the pressure, literally.

This is why I take no credence in tackle reviews. We are not all the same hooked up to the same fish.

As far as the question- To me, it's about the bite. You work the lure and get the bite, that is a big part. Gaffing or harpooning comes a close second. Reeling the line in....let the new guys do that, LOL.
Its rather simple , If you complete the whole fight by yourself, you caught it. If you pass the rod you assisted in catching the fish.

Thats another way of seeing it , not necessarily correct.
Others may see it as a more complex equation than , I fought it the whole time " it's my fish ".
Take your own boat, fish solo....
