Ok we all met as usual at 5:30 am ready to go the water was flat calm and we were ready to go. Personally I was excited to really get to use the final production rod of the 10000X and the Black Monstro. I fell in love with the Ocean Revolution 10000X, I can honestly say its my favorite jigging rod of all time. I was impressed with its power and bend.

Boat 1: Glenn, Chip, Andy, Topper
Boat 2: Sami, Dan, Pete and AL

We made quick time top our first stop because of the ocean conditions and got ready to roll. On our boat the first drops were really frustrating ones. I immediately was bitten of like 3 times in a row and continued losing like 12 jigs. I boated the first fish which was a Huge albie followed by several ASSACO Jacks LOL

Today was cutoff central ... sharks and King Macs just cut us off all day.

Then it was Kingfish central and thats where Topper (Mac Daddy) took over boating several decent sized Macs in short time. Meanwhile Andy had his technique down and started hammering away at the fish

These two guys did great for the first trip. We couldnt find the amberjacks until about 1pm and then all hell broke loose. We started bailing fish at an epic rate

Andy broke the small fish curse by landing a slob Amberjack in the 85 pound range followed by several from Topper, chip and myself. All fish in the 52" range but SUPER FAT.

I then proceeded to fight what I thought was a shark but ended up being the largest Amberjack of the trip which was in the 100 pound class. The fish wasnt long but its girth was almost 40" round

This wasn't a normal trip but the variety was amazing, Topper was on fire catching king macs, blackfin tuna on topwater, grouper and amberjacks. Andy did great as well catching Albies, and big amberjacks. Me I got very lucky on this trip catching some pigs and a special friend who should shut some critics up about catching big fish on spinning gear ... only joking!!!

Somedays its better to be lucky than to have skill

Im pretty beat at this point, I just landed some quality 50" fish but I drop down immediately and as soon as I hit bottoma nd retrieve several times I get slammed. As a normal large amberjack will do it sits a second and then takes off but teh run was pretty long.

I settle in and start gaining but after I gain, it takes away. Basically its a give an take battle but I'm not gaining much. Chips circling the boat and Im starting to think I have a record fish. Chip tells me he has deep color but Im looking at my half empty fish and wondering how. He tells me whatever it is its frigging huge.

I battle this beast for about 30 minutes withe th Ocean Revolution 1000X and a stella 20000PG. Finally we get to see what it is and its a huge shark. I mean big as in over 400 pounds. The things is as thick as could be and the jig is stuck perfectly in the corner of its jaw

Mind you Im using 130 leader but it still doesnt break. At this point all I want to do is land the frigging thing so I can say I've successfully jigged and landed a large shark. We get leader, chip pulls her alongside and after some pictures she didnt want o stay so she dove down deep and I need to gain about 100 yards again. Finally I get her along side us and she is every inch of 10' and 400 pounds.

Chip gently grabs the leader tells me he is going to break her lose and he breaks the leader and we watch her swim away clean ... but with my SL jig attached unfortunately. High Fives around and we go back to jigging

Okay, so what is the deal with licking the eyes?

Great catch on the shark.

I dont know I started this stupid licking the eye thing 4 trips ago and it stuck, we all do it except this trip I started a new one. I bit them an left teeth marks. Im frigging weird. dont know how else to explain it. I talk dirty to them, I lick them, now I bite them, I even humped a couple

Looks like you guys had fun. That's what it's all about.
Those kingfish are jig stealer's. They can be a major PITA in the GOM. Now you know why everyone asks what type of wire leader is best while fishing the GOM. After you lose a bunch of jigs, especially expensive ones, the wire leaders come out. I use a 3' Stainless Steel pc of Piano wire 104# test. You can buy it straight 36" lengths. It's about 100 pcs to a tube. You will catch less fish, but you never lose a jig. I still use the Kevlar assist cord. They will take about two kingfish before they are chewed up.

Glen, don't worry about the blood war paint and biting of fish. I have a friend that does the same thing with every fish. He just gets so excited he has to face paint everything he kills with blood. :) He gets rather smelly after a while. His sweat will make the blood run on his face and then he licks it off with his tongue. I will say that I have never seen him "Mount" a fish.

Did you guys do an overnight trip?

glenn, very good stuff... I'm glad you got that shark on a jig, very uncommon!

btw, what #lb size split ring are you using on the jigs? I noticed you tie directly the swivel to the split ring...

I use Varivas 400# split rings or Smith 200# split rings whichever APS has at the time either work great. Unlike most I use the bigger spilt rings regardless of the size of the jig

Yes I tie leader to swivel which is direct to split ring
