You said your casting distance limited you. How far casting are we talking? I took my new setup out today and was throwing it underhand just in case and it seems the top shot is limiting it. I can still get it about 45-50ft with a halco with no hooks. But from what you’re saying that may not be enough

The more I looked into the conventional vs spinning reel debate and what others have said on this forum. I canceled my order for the new 18k Saragosa and instead bought a Avet 5/2 raptor. Now all I need to do is learn how to cast a conventional reel. From the distance I was seeing with my slammer 3 8500. I’m almost positive that the conventional can cast further :D

Honestly, the Avet raptor is not particularly suitable for consistent casting. Its bulky and heavy. I assure you, unless you wear mechanical working glovyou will have blisters and fatigue will settle in sooner than you think. If you're going to invest on a conventional reel, i would purchase the Talica 12II or 16II (2 SPEED) or the Shimano Speedmaster II 12 OR 16. Both are lighter in weight, tad bit higher speed for both gears than the Avet and easier to cast. I would have been happy with either reel on my trip due to the fact it is 2 speed. But, who am I to recommend...I was using a vintage Penn 555gs and a Torium 30. Both spooled with 50# Power Pro braid. Worked well for me
I know it's heavy. But honestly it's the same weight as the slammer and I think 1 or 2 ozs less than that new Saragosa. So weight wise it's equal. I'm bringing both. But I want something that will cast far. I will test that and the fathom 40 I have and in all reality I really wanted to buy an Avet lol.

My wife and I are in the same boat, we are going for our first tuna trip in November. I have using this forum and great threads like this one and one below from in.
what trip you on? I'm going in November also you can stand next to me and we can both not catch fish together since we don't know what we're doing ;)
