60 or 80 pound braid for a 18000 saragosa.

Hi guys
I just had a 18000 saragosa delivered and was wandering if 60 pnd braid would be enough.
I am putting it on a shimano 400 jig stick and will be using it for tuna mainly and some jigging for kingfish etc.
Some of the tuna here can get to 100 kilo's if your lucky.
What are your thoughts.
Thanks.

the stella is unbelievably smooth, more than the saragosa. but youre right, saragosa is quite smooth too!
i prefer 65# SPiderwire Stealth braided line. its cheap and i have never had a line failure. other brands, I have had several with- one much more than others. I usually buy a 1100 yard spool off ebay for $60.
Both are very smooth, saragosa little rougher to the feel during run but not much.
Stock saragosa drags should hold up pretty well. If you feel need to change get carbon drag replacements from smoothdrag.com

I'm not a big fan of spider wire(old stuff that is).
Never heard of stealth though, I'll have to check it out.
Is it thin for its poundage.
Thanks Ronnie.

Think I'll leave the stock drag for a few trips just to see how it goes.

That new profile picture you have looks awesome, what's the rod you've got there and is that the saragosa or a stella, cant tell in the pic.
I believe Rich was using a Hot's 4'8"XXH Wei World Rod with a Stella 16000PG reel. :)

Got it right on Brian. :D
I just had a reply from smooth drag.
The lady said that the saragosa drag is different to the stella drag but she has some carbon washers to suit for $11,50 ,$7 for cals grease and $3 for shipping to Aus.
Any one know what the difference is between the two drags(size etc) and also with the new carbon washers will it give the reel more drag or just smoother.
I also have a 8000 spheros I want to get a new drag for and set it up with 15 braid for those days where the fish are 15 to 20 kg,and just have fun.
I don't have any numbers to back it up but I did the upgrade in a Spheros 14000 and it supposedly gives the reel the potential for increased drag. ;)
Same on my Spheros 14000, greased. A bit more drag (5# I think), unreal smoothness, and most importantly, they should last a lot longer and not freeze up with a hot run.

Kil had stock drags lock on his Saragosa IIRC. What ever came of that?

Far out man.
What was he hooked up on when that happened.
Think I'll be getting them sooner then later.

BTW what is a saragosa IIRC.
Shimano is still examining my Saragosa 18000F.
The big tuna took over 250 yards of 80 lbs on 25 lbs drag at astounding speed. When I fought a 250 lbs yellowfin tuna, it didn't take line like that.
It is a very rare case and I think Saragosa 18000F can handle any average size tuna.
i dont think 80 lb is good, because i think the reel will broke!!
whit a seriously fish!!! only stella 20000 can use 80lb in a good use!!!
better 65lb on saragosa!!!also because you have more line.

I have used 80 lbs braided line and tested the reel extensively for big AJ and tuna and the reel performed beautifully. It is not Stella 10000/20000, but I feel the reel is capable of handling 25 lbs drag with 80 lbs braided line though I am not sure it can handle advertizes 44 lbs drag.

I got a phone call from Shimano today that the problem with my Saragosa reel was the Knob on top of the reel was jammed when tuna made a long run at rapid speed. It was not a serious problem and there was no damage of drag system. They recommend to lubricate between top knob and washer. I know no reel is safe in my hand. :)

thanks for the follow up.
Thanks Ksong.
I was going to mention the knob on top of the spool as the exact same thing happened to a fella down here in Aust on his 14000 shperos.
He had a 100kg plus marlin on for one and a half hours no problems and then a couple weeks later he was cubing when his reel screamed of just like yours.
Same thing the plastic knob melted to the drag and ceased up.
