OTI popping rod

My 7 1/2 foot OTI Popper arrived today.I'm actually pretty excited. If it fishes as well as it looks, those Cape Cod Bay tuna are in some serious trouble....Thanks TJ. I'll be back for some plugs and stuff.

I got 7'6" 80lbs popping blank.
I am going to make a short conventional jigging rod from the front part.
It is perfect as its length is 5' and weighs 5 oz. I am going to use it mainly for tuna jigging.

are you going to have it acid wrapped?

There was a discussion about the merit of acid wrapping for short tuna rods.
Some concern that too short blanks are not good for spiral wrapping, but many rod builders don't think so. I might have acid wrapped rod as I want to experiment myself.

yeah that's why I was wondering - after the butt, reel seat and foregrip you probably won't have more than 3 feet for guides. It'll be good to see whether thats enough or not

I had JPR Rods wrap my OTI 5 1/2' blank with spiral guides after watching a guy -Trent or Trey?- fish with one during an '07 Oct Big E trip.

I was amazed at how stable the reel remained when he fought nice size YFT.

He didn't seem to need a belt/gimbal to keep the reel from twisting.

There is plenty of room to make a spiral wrap if you use the bumper guide rather than a three guide transition on a 5 ft rod with 4 guides. A 5.5ft rod would take 5 guides so you could do a three guide transition for that one. You would end up with one guide at 12 degrees, next at about 40-60degrees, next at about 140-160 degrees and the other two at 180 degrees.

I got my three blanks today.... Thks TJ. Now I have to find some time in May to wrap them.
