I have fished the Hots... I agree with your observations. 100 percent! However, that Hots is not fully loaded in the picture. It will stand more. It will flex past the reel seat. An awesome rod with a high price. The Hots Wei World in a 4'8" flavor put a spinning rod on my must have list for jigging. I have been waiting on the OTI 600g since learning that the blank was to be made. The rod is worth paying shipping to take a pull on. My observation. |

Now it is time to experiment with a shorter rod. I have waited any window to jig AJ and grouper again in NC for a week, but it blows everyday and I don't see any break until Monday. ![]() |

Kil,
Have you used the Smith Nirai? How do you feel it compares with the Wei World and the OTI-600, especially in terms of strength of the blank? It is longer, but Smith rates it for PE8 and 500 gram jigs, but it does not seem to me to be as stiff as the OTI 600. Russ

I feel OTI 600 g blanks is a little stiffer than both rods, but it will bend enough when you have a nice tuna on it. ![]() Here is a video of Smith Nirai action when hooked a nice samson fish. When using ultra light rods like Hot's Wei or Smith Nirai for jigging big fish, you have to handle the rods with care no matter what the rating is. YouTube - Brandon hookup |

Its not always about how stiff or how much backbone a rod has.
Lots of rods are stiffer than the Wei World, my JM 400G has more backbone. Its about enjoying, i never enjoyed a rod more than the Wei World the flexibility and strenth and lightness is what makes this rod special. In my opinion a stiffer and stronger rod with no flex, will tire you out faster, that will negate the whole purpos of Japanese style of jigging. I have jigged 8,10hrs straight and landed big fish without much effert or got tired. Lots of people talk about the price, but the fun and enjoyment that i have received from this jigging rod is priceless. Last edited by JFLORES : 04-02-2008 at 03:34 PM. |

John,
I'll give my review after testing OTI 600g and Hot's Wei side by side. The rod will be done in two weeks as I plan to bring the rod at Newport Canyon Runner seminar on April 26. OTI's tip is as thin as Hot's Wei's. When I checked the blank, I felt the rod action of OTI is as good as Wei. The Hopper 500g rod's tip is too thick for my taste. The beauty of custom rod is you can choose blanks you want and you can make a rod what you like based on your experience and your preference. The new custom OTI 600g rod cost more than Hot Wei rod. Here is picture of tips of 400g Jigging Master, 4'8" Hot Wei which John uses and OTI's 600g blank(from the bottom). As you see, the tip of GM is thicker compared to Hot and OTI's. Hot has thinner mid section to the butt. Personally I'd like to have a little thicker blank in mid section and butt section for the strength and backbone even it gains a littel weight. There is no such a thing " the lighter, the stronger " . I tell my friends not to buy GLX or IMX and to buy GL2 and GL3 as I feel GL2 and GL3 are stronger than GLX and IMX though GLoomis claims that GLX and IMX is lighter and stronger. 5'6" OTI's 600g blank weighs 5 1/2 oz and the weight of finished rod is probably about 9 oz when I cut one ft from the butt. As Hot Wei weighs about 8 oz, 9 oz rod is not bad at all. My concern of the OTI's custom rod is not the action, but the strengh and backbone whether it can endure the pressure of big fish. It looks good, but I got to test myself to prove it. ![]() Last edited by ksong : 04-02-2008 at 04:21 PM. |

Paul, i would say that the Wei World is as strong as the JM400 but it's flexibility is alot better that's what saves the angler. |
