I appreciate the help...but
if I am not interested in getting the jig to the bottom, but to suspended Tuna, is one type favored over the other?
Wondering about the falling action while getting into the zone? |

Randy,
The best thing to do is bring several jigs of various weights. You just don't know what kind of current you will be dealing with. Jigging is a lot of work and you're most likely going to be doing it all day so the lighter you can get away with the better, IMO. Smaller jigs have a better flutter action on the drop but if the current is kickn' you'll have to drop the heavy lead. If the current is too strong, a light jig will drift very quickly. Your jig will end up a 100 yards down current before it even gets anywhere near the strike zone. On my last trip I was dropping 14oz jigs for AJs and even those were drifting some due to the current. If you have light to no current then you can get away with lighter jigs. I have jigs from 3oz to 14oz. I usually jig with 7oz to 14oz depending on the current. I haven't had the luxury of tying on a jig lighter than 5oz yet. If cost is an issue; believe it or not, sometimes the good ol' diamond jigs are hard to beat and they cost less than most other jigs of the same weight. Whatever you decide, your first trip will be a big learning experience. There are a lot of good guys on this board that have been doing this for a long time. Take their advice, good luck on your trip, and let us know how you do. Last edited by ToneyC : 06-02-2008 at 04:09 PM. |
