You sound like my kind of fisherman.

I have always called the dolphin in the picture a cow and the bright yellow gold ones bulls. Actually the females have a more slanted forehead then the males that have a distinctive blunt head.

A lot of people get confused on the chicken dolphin. There a lot of pompano dolphin in the gulf. They never get big. a six pounder is a big one. Both males and females have a sloped head and have a more silver and pale yellow color to them. They also have a round belly as the normal common dolphin have a flat belly.

Fishing has been a little on the slow side lately. Not much bait, not many rips holding bait. It's the dull hot dog days of August. Sept is always a better month.

I've never wasted good whiskey on a fish. Drinking whiskey in the hot sun is not a good idea this time of year. You can take drunk real bad in this heat. A drunk fisherman is not an asset on the boat. A drunk can be very dangerous. They clown around, fall overboard, and talk to much. A few belts on the ride home is OK as long as your not the one backing up the boat to refuel and smash the transom on the bulkhead.

GS knows that's a bull. He just calls the blue/silver ones cows. If he's on the bridge and a big dolphin is in the spread he will yell out something like "Cow gonna's hit Port flat line", "Bull approaching Shotgun". You can see the baits, lures and fish so much better from higher up.

Very seldom do you see a cow over 25 pounds. Those pompano dolphin are great marlin and YF baits. When you clean a YF, look in the stomach. You will find flying fish, and small 2-3lb dolphin. Dolphin also love flying fish. Trolling those rubber flyers, will produce dolphin. They also love a ballyhoo trolled behind a bird.

Who started that tradition of a rookie eating the YF's heart? I've never heard of that until reading about it on this board.

MrBill,

I don't know who started the tradition of rookie eating the YF's heart but it sure fun to watch them chew on that thing .

It's like a symbol of warrior's trophy from the battle field.
