HunterII Quick response (i'm at work unfortunately
)By cutting the blank, you've indeed made it stiffer if measured as deflection at the tip for a given load. However, if you measure the deflection of the point on the uncut blank 6" back of the tip, it is the same deflection at the new tip once you cut it. Thus the blank is not more powerful (i.e.) capable of bearing a greater load with equivalent recovery. You've merely made the tip more resilient to deflection, but the power in a rod under heavy load is in the butt. As far as it being a fast action blank goes, all of the higher end blanks are compound action. There is the tip action and then the "fighting" action, which is a whole other discussion. FWIW, I love my Shimano reels. Doesn't mean you'll catch me fishing w/ a Trevala. Hope this helps.

If u want to fish inshore and tug on Blackfins (small) and Bonitas, da Trevala would be a great rod but still even then is too soft. I gave mine away. Something to think about, last time I check da trevalas aren't even sold in Japan...they don't rate. There's other sturdier value jigging rods u should checkout like da Hopper, Boca, Sea Magic.

I plan on getting an OTI rod soon, as well as the heaviest hopper rod (up to 600g i believe). Below is the current rod I have, with me thumbing the spool (at 20lbs of drag) and pulling up just before I broke the bimini. I hooked an AJ on the rod before and it was pretty good, but I want to compare it with the beefiest model.

Bret, I don't know there is 600g Hopper rod.
When I checked Captharry website, this model below is the heaviest. HOPC 500FS58 5'8" CAST 80-200lb 300-400gr I have the same model, but it was rated 250-500gr. This rod is not for those who think light tip is important to give action to jigs for tuna as the tip is pretty stiff. |

Hm, you might be right - though I'll look again next time I'm in FTU to be sure. They do apparently have a 5'8" spinning rod rated to 600g
Right Rigger Tackle HOPS-600FH Hopper Rod 5' 8 Spinning 125lb to 250lb upto 600 Gram Jig |

Lest anyone think I won't fish Shimano, I have two jigging rods, both Trevalas, one uses a Kaikon 3000, and the heavier has an Avet JX, both work just fine for me, the heavy rig jigged up a 65lb YFT when I was on the Big E last October, and it wasn't a problem getting him in. If I ever jig up a 100+ YFT on the Trevalas, then I might swear to change rods.
I tried the OTI jigging rods last trip and liked them alot, but I already have the Trevalas. I am building OTI Popping rods though. DBG |
