700XH is very heavy rod and I use it for bigger tuna over 100 lbs. 700H is much better choice for 50 -100 lbs tuna.

Check the Hopper rod blank below. They are pretty cheap for their quality.

When I checked Captharry website, this model below is the heaviest.

HOPC 500FS58 5'8" CAST 80-200lb 300-400gr

I have the same model, but it was rated 250-500gr.
This rod is not for those who think light tip is important to give action to jigs for tuna as the tip is pretty stiff.

I saw the 600g rated rod at FTU yesterday. I took a pic with my cell but it isn't clear enough. The rod is very stiff, but cheap so I may buy it and try it out.

If I ever jig up a 100+ YFT on the Trevalas, then I might swear to change rods.

I tried the OTI jigging rods last trip and liked them alot, but I already have the Trevalas. I am building OTI Popping rods though.

You can send a PM to Minnow at OTI and see what blanks he has available. He's the man!

Yo Hunter,

For this fisherman the conventionals are the only way to go for jigging tuna over the 100# number. I have been throwing artificials for more years than I can remember and have tried just about every rod and or reel combination out there. My present favorite jigging rod for the 100 -150# price range is the Super Seeker CJBF70XH blank using Sic guides. I also have an 80XH which is also a great stick but not nearly as stiff as the 70XH. I have relegated my Calstar 700XH to my 40 and 50 pound spinner work as the tip is too soft for this fisherman for anything more. Yeah, I know, the factory says it is a 40 - 100# rod but not for me. The 700H is just the wrong stick for that application as it is really a strong 40# line stick that does well with 50# as well. I have caught fish over 150#'s on my 700H, as well as Calstar 800H's, 850H's cut down 3 inches off the tip (My favorite under 120# tuna jig and bait stick) using 40# test line on all of them but it was NOT fun.

I have tried some of the noodle rods with both spinners and conventionals and have no use for them on bigger fish but that is just one guys opinion.

I should note most all of my jig fishing is West Coast style meaning it is a big boat, with plenty of overhead casting freedom, usually anchored in deeper water and yes the rail is my friend. I have also fished from Panga's and Yachts and would still use the same gear.

My reels are mostly Accurate Boss 2 speeds for this application as well as some Accurate Platinums and some Cal's Super 12 2 speed International Penns. At present I prefer the Accurate Boss 870 2 speed for tuna up to around 130#'s and above that, when I suspect the really big tuna are around, I am using the Boss 665 2 speed in the wide version and am really liking it. If I feel the biggest beast out there does not esceed 150#'s I will use the 665 2 speed in regular width. Up until the last year I was using the Platinum 12 and the Super 12's for the bigger fish application and loved it.

Hopefully this year Accurate will come out with their Boss 30 and 50 size reels which I have seen and handled and should be fantastic for this application as well as they are easy to use, open top reels.

As far as weight of the rods go I have no problem with the above mentioned sticks and I have been known to throw artificial's non stop for 8 days straight. Admittedly on the 8th day I was fading but I am not as young as I once was.

In my opinion, the 50 to 150 pound fish jig gear cannot be covered in one rig. Its just too big a range for maximum efficiency. But it can be done. Given the need for just one rig it would be the Super Seeker 70XH and the Accurate Boss 665 2 speed regular size reel. I would fill the bottom portion of the reel about 1/3 with 65 pound hollow spectra. I would then splice in another amount of 80 Pound hollow leaving enough room for around 75 - 100 Yds of mono top shot depending on your casting skills and how far you can throw.
I usually suggest for the amount of mono to allow for the distance of your furthest cast with the particular rig plus 10 yds to allow for several recuts allowing for removal of fish or boat abrasion.

Good luck with your decision

Jamie
