    2/4/12 HI fishing report

Went jigging out of Hatteras looking for BFT on Sat. with Irwan and Chip on Hydra 26' CC. We fished 230 to 300 area in 250-300' and stayed busy all day fighting many AJs/False albies/sharks. We caught one blackfin but never ran into any BFT. Came back to the dock and heard of HI charters getting into BFT pretty good in 460 area, which is about 15 miles north of where we were. It seems clear that they are getting closer to HI.

Where are the reports of BFT out of HI? I suspect the fish came from the point or close to it.

If really off Hatteras, I sure would like to know the particulars. Where, Size, what seen, hooked, landed. Who did it.

    thanx

    Here is one:

    Hatteras Harbor Fishing Reports

We also saw two HI charter boats including Big Tahuna that ran up north. I guess they got their share also. The word is that there were lots of charter boats and some private boats from OI and HI at 460 area which is about ten miles below the Point (offshore) in deep water where the GS was running hard. They ran into lots of large BFTs airing out and such but they had a case of lock-jaw at least later with so many boat in a small area.

FYI, the area where the fish were found is somewhere right between OI and HI fleet. My guess now is the school will continue coming down south and settle in 230-400 area which is reachable by OI fleet but closer to HI, as they have in the last couple of years.

I have my boat down in Hatteras and will go soon to try to intercept one. BTW, we had non-stop action jigging for other fish and all three of us basically bonked at the end. It's been six months since we had jigged like this and I guess we need to build up muscles again. ;-)

Where do you leave your boat? Is it dry storage or in the water? I have a 27 Contender and was thinking of leaving it down there for the BFT season. I would only leave it down there if it is dry storage.

Basically, Hatteras is our home port and we leave the boat there year around. It is an awesome place for all kinds of offshore/inshore fishing, but we primarily do jigging offshore. I took the boat there a few years back thinking that I will take it elsewhere once we figure out the place, but there are so many options there, I am not sure if we will ever leave...

I store it a private residence close to the launching place. Unfortunately, I had to take it back to VA in a hurry when the hurricane came last summer. You should have some pretty good options including dry storing at Teach's Lair:
