Kil, I thought your 4'8 rod was short....PFFT!!! it's not even close to being short. Out in Cali the guy who makes these, Ed Robinson was there, and we spoke for a bit. His Whopper Stopper rods are only 3'8 and kick the crap out of fish with light line. Check them out, pretty cool, and makes your 4'8 look like a Surf rod: Whopper Stoppers mini rod - custom fishing rods.

i think the 450g is getting cut tonight
still trying to decide 400 or 450
i have the 350g spin
i think the 450g will fill the gap betwen the OTI 300 and 600

500 is stiff but flexable i would go with 400G if I was doing it again. My old smith was 400g and handled big tuna and AJ's

The longer the time that you are pulling up on a fish , the longer rod will definitely cause more strain on your back . The short rods will not cast out as far, so the best place to check out what length is how do you care to feel when pulling up a big one? I am using an 8 foot rod with 40 pound line and I am beat up on 40lb. Albacores after 20 minute fight. But I can out cast the open party boaters with shorter rods, and keep the line away from under the boat when fish is circling and I usually can keep from getting crossed up with other lines easier by going up and over these other short rods, so Until I get a big one down deep, the longer rod is more my style. Too short and you will not get enough bend going on and there won't be any lifting or alot less leverage.
