Question Penn 114H upgrade.

I have an older (post style) 114H. I'm thinking of buying a Penn tunnel frame kit and doing an upgrade. Does anyone have and thoughts, is this a good idea?I can get the frame kit with spool and mounting base for $70.00.

if you are going to upgrade it you might as well get on ebay and get an accurate frame and side plates. THe only problem with this is the accurate kits are so sought after it would be cheaper to buy a new 2 speed almost than buy the accurate kit

I looked at that and the price was too cosstly. A pair of side plates sold for over $200. I was watching a complete kitted reel that sold for $230. I can get plates from Bereson tackle for $160 brand new. But at that price It might make more sense to buy a new 2 speed reel.

I went ahead and added an Accurate frame to my old 114h. I checked around and a lot of people said the sideplates didn't bring much to the party except a hefty pricetag. So far I've been happy with the frame upgrade by itself. It adds some rigidity and closed the gap between the frame and the spool so I'm not too worried about using smaller diameter mono or braid now. I've had 50-60 line get caught in between the gap before.

Right now you can also get the Tiburon kits over at Charkbait for the Penns as well. They look like pretty much the same quality as the Accurate frames from what I've seen.

if you have a chrome over brass spool, most would not bother. if you have a lighter aluminum spool, i think an accurate or tiburon frame would be a reasonable and cost effective upgrade. personally, i think the side plates are not cost effective and have never recommended them.
